It's standard practice to zap all ports with an ESD gun.

The standards normally specify air discharge, with a rounded electrode, so connectors normally take the static zap to the grounded shell as the probe approaches. For abuse testing I fit the contact electrode (pointy) and deliberately put it on each pin of the connector. Much more aggressive than the real world, but a nice way of testing design margin.
