Hello all. I'm thinking of rebuilding my upscale Custom Sam X 2 stage. I built it about 15 years ago and it had two flights, one successful and the other not so much. The sustainer motor (E-9) failed to light because a small piece of dog barf worked it's way into the nozzle. It is gap staged. I was using dog barf as well as a kevlar cloth to protect the chute in the booster. The rocket lawn darted between two parked cars. That shook me up.
Anyway, the booster is still in good pretty shape. I will just need to build the upper stage. I would like to build a new booster but the motor mount is no longer available from Sunward, where I originally bought it. Its a 4X18mm and 1-24mm mount for a bt80 tube. I may inquire to Balsa Machining to see if they will make one for me. They made the centering rings for the booster tube coupler for the original.
I am also thinking of using the Eggtimer Apogee Deployment Controller as a safety measure, just in case that second stage doesn't light. Also, If I build another booster I may use rail buttons on the booster rather than the long 1/4 inch launch lug.
Performance isn't spectacular, as you can see from the attached .ork file, but that's ok as long as it's safe. That file is sort of a rough draft and needs some refining. Anyway, if anyone has any suggestions, I would be glad to hear them. Thanks for taking a look!
