The UC Aerospace group from University of Canterbury, New Zealand attended the ESRA / Spaceport America Cup 2024 held last week in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
Competing in the 30K COTS category, flying on an Aerotech O5500X-PS

They were fortunate to send the rocket skywards on the first day of the competition, before the weather gods played havoc for a couple of days.

Well done UC Aerospace - back to back wins @ 30K COTS.

Well done Team UC. It takes a lot of effort to get you where you are. Excellent work :clapping:.

I assume Qantas didn't lose your rocket this time?

Interesting story.. the team flew from Christchurch to Aussie and then on to the States via Qantas.
The team manager flew direct from Auckland to Texas a couple of days later with the rocket on Air NZ.

Issues avoided.

Sounds like a smart move.

Did any of the Aussie teams have misplaced rockets this year, or did they fly Air NZ too?

I think Melbourne got second in 30K COTS. Other internationals that also took out some of the categories were from Turkey, Brazil & Canada.

UC also got runner up for sportsmanship.

Congrats to all 122 teams from the US and around the world.
3 of the 122 entries were 'sugar'; team 133 from Sao Paulo Brazil took second place in the 10,000' Student Researched And Designed (SRAD) division using a KNSB 'sugar' motor.

Members of the UC team were out at the site on both Saturday and Sunday helping us get the pads set up. (They also helped with the livestream setup as well.) I can honestly say without their help I don't think we would have been ready on Wednesday morning unless I skipped doing safety reviews on Monday and went out and worked on the pads. And then they stayed on Saturday and helped with teardown and cleanup. The storage units have never looked better inside.

Not only were they very hard working, they were a lot of fun to be around. I was surprised they only got runner up, but I don't know anything about the judging.

The UC Aerospace team's ambitious 30k COTS project for the Spaceport America Cup 2024 is truly exciting! Their innovative approach highlights the growing significance of research in advancing rocketry. If you're interested in the intersection of rigorous research and space technology, I recommend checking out these research proposal services for insights on how academic research proposals can contribute to cutting-edge projects. It’s fascinating to see how detailed proposals and thorough research can drive progress in rocketry and space exploration.
