Hopefully this is in the correct section. I am located in the S.E part of New Mexico. Roswell, Dexter, Hagerman, Artesia, Ruidoso area. We are trying to get people who are interested in model rocketry to start a Nar club so that we can get together and find an area to possibly launch HP rockets, and have NAR behind us. Anybody who is interested in joining or even just has suggestions on how to go about finding people interested, would be a great help...Thanks for taking the time to read this...rsbhunter

One of the best ways to start recruitment in a club is to talk advertise about the field 'You Already Have' for Mid Power and Low Power rockets. You have a field with like 1500 on a side, which is a good thing to have now a-days.

Once you have a group flying LPR/MPR , the HPR become the easy next step.

See if the local hobby shops will let you post a flyer. It brings in business for them and helps you, too.
Believe it or not, we only have a Hobby Lobby, but i will do that!!!! Thanks, rsbhunter

True...i just can't believe in a small town area (<50,000) and surrounding area, with honestly so little to do for the kids, that there isn't a club, or at least a quarterly launch.... but this is a different area...rsbhunter

This is our launch yesterday, Saturday. Most of the young men are from the New Mexico Military Institure, a couple from the local area. All had a good time, I brought a couple more rockets just to try and generate some interest....I am going to contact a couple of our city councilors who seems to be SUPER community oriented, and see about their idea's and how to contact the local schools. We had maybe 10-14 kids, so it was a decent start....rsbhunter P.S. the gentleman who put the launch on is in the Civil Air Patrol, a real nice guy and doing all he can to start a club, right now we have 3 guy's in, which give a "provisional " club, and we need 5 members to have a "sanction" club. I probably have the wrong terms but that is the gist of how he explained it to me...

I would drive an hour to hour and 1/2 for a 1500 foot side field to fly LPR/MPR. Even without a waver you can fly small Hs even on rockets under 3.3 pounds.

1500 feet on a side makes a nice field to fly a BT60 rocket on D and E motors and get it back with the proper chute applied.

Very true...and once we get a club, the NAR insurance goes a long way to helping the land owners agree, or consider allowing launches on their farms/ranches....rsbhunter

You could use social media as a source for recruitment.
Like a "SE New Mexico Rocketry" page.
Put your contact info. on there for people interested in starting an NAR section.
Advertise your next launch for interested newcomers.

I don't do facebook, but i could use a secondary e mail address to be contacted. I will talk to the gentleman who has been organizing the launches and see if he would use his Facebook??? Thanks....rsbhunter

Good luck getting something going. You only need a very small number (I think it's three) NAR members to start a section.

My wife and I were in Roswell (well, to a friend's house north and east of town) last Sunday. It was .... interesting..... getting there from Carlsbad. I didn't check in with you before the trip as it turned out we were pretty tightly scheduled.

So , you were here right after the flood? We had at our house right @ 9" of rain. We luckily missed being flooded out, but believe it or not, where I launch, they are stacking all the people who WERE flooded , furniture, sheetrock, appliances, belonging's, etc. You must have tried to come up on the highway that had the bridged washed out/ damaged? Sorry your visit couldn't have been better...rsbhunter

Yes, we were there right after the flood. My friend has a neighbor who works at NMDOT and we were getting text updates about road status relayed as we headed north. We didn't take US 285 (where the bridge is washed out) but came north on NM 2 after leaving Artesia. We still had to cross some water running over the road at Greenfield and it took me awhile to decide we could do it in our rented Kia Soul. We then cut west to US 285 as NM 2 was closed. Then we went around Roswell to the east side with one other running water crossing to get to my friend's house near Tierra Berrenda park. He said they'd gotten six inches of rain in six hours on Saturday and that the creek that bordered their property was running so full it woke both of them up during the night (early Sunday morning) but the creek stayed in its banks. What would've normally been a little more than an hour's drive up from Carlsbad took three.

Yes, it did literally wipe out alot of people's homes, leaving them with almost nothing. The major flooding was limited is scope, but was horrendous. The pile of debris at the old airport is almost 200 yds long by 20' deep. Makes you appreciate how good you have it, when other's lose everything. Glad you made it home....water over the road here can be a tragic situation....rsbhunter

Water running over the road is trouble anywhere....which is why I turned around the first time I came to that spot, even though others were going through (mostly higher vehicles than the one I had, but not all). We spent a good hour wandering around the farm roads between NM 2 and US 285 looking for another passable way north but did not succeed and finally went back to the same spot. I watched more vehicles go through and finally figured out it wasn't getting deeper as one went across, and when a Hyundai Elantra got through OK I knew I could do it.

From some of what we saw of the flooding online, I'm glad we were able to go around most of it. I know for some it was quite horrible and I heard of two deaths.

rsbhunter,

I’m the Section Activities Chairman for the NAR. Reach out to me at [email protected] and I can help you find some potential members. I can also help you charter a Section when you’re ready. You actually only need two (2) NAR members for the initial charter and then five (5) NAR members to renew after two years.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,
Chuck Neff

Chuck, THANK YOU!!!! This is almost a daunting project, but we have a couple guys that i believe are up to the task. I help a gentleman named Brady, who is in the Civil Air Patrol who is leading the charge. This is beneficial because he is much better versed in NAR and the path to go, in order to become a full fledged club...I will be contacting you in a day or so, just trying to finish some honey do's before the cold hits! Again, Thank you very much for reaching out to me....rsbhunter

Chuck, thanks again for helping...I don't know if Brady has kept you up with what is going on...GREAT NEWS! We (he) is filing for a public club with NAR, so we are officially going to be a club... it is the Pecos Valley Rocketeers ! Any suggestions you have on recruiting members would be greatly appreciated....I guess that Brady stays in touch with you...I'm excited to build a new club, I honestly think it will be a benefit to our area and the youth of this area....Russell
