Tripoli Las Vegas Springfest 2014 Who's coming?

Looks like its been scheduled for March 7th, 8th and 9th

This is usually an AWESOME launch if the weather cooperates its typically not to hot, and nice and clear (but it has been known to go bad on us)


I am looking forward to this launch I haven't flown since MWP

I do plan on bringing DER GREEN MAX a 7.5" scratch built to fly on a CTI 98mm 4 grain Skidmark! M 1790 woo hoo

Not sure what else I am going to fly. but there is ALWAYS plenty of flying time and no lines so if you are in the area come on out and fly!

I will be there as well as the Arizona Rocketry Team.

Not sure what all we will be bringing yet but I am sure we will have something very interesting to say the least.

I might even whip up a few small motors for some test flights.

Start here with the Tripoli Vegas website. Balsa Machining and Giant Leap Rocketry will be there as vendors. As far as where to stay...well, funny you ask, there's a little town about 25 miles north with a few hotel options and usually a couple vacancies. For Vegas, I would suggest South Point or the M Resort. The town of Jean is much closer, and the Gold Strike Hotel & Casino usually more affordable than Vegas.

I'll bring "Jihad This" (Wildman Darkstar Extreme) to hopefully fly on my first M motor & L3 attempt (Thanks to my TAPs: Gerald, Roy & CJ!). Lauren also plans to NAR certify junior Level 1 with her Wildman Vindicator on a I211W. Cross your certification fingers, please.

I am also planning a K1750R for my Competitor 3 and a K375 Dual Thrust for a Madcow Tomach, which should get into the top 10% of our 22k MSL waiver, if I can get it done in time. Maybe another J510W attempt for the Darkstar Jr or my scratch build 38mm rocket.

So much building to do...so little time!

LOL I haven't been building much I got TOTALLY burned out on rocketry (It happens when you do it for a living) I have been building airplanes and Helicopters lately.. BUT I have been out of it for a while (I only did 2 launches last year) so I am ready to jump back in it!

Oh and for those who asked.. theres camping on the lakebed! thats the best part of a tripoli vagas launch! well almost!

I believe saturday (I could be wrong) is EX day... Look that up on the website to be sure! there are some AWESOME ex guys that attend this launch so if you are into ex its worth the trip!

Just drive carefully once the pavement ends. You'll be ok.

I saw a Prius there at the last launch--one of our members regularly drives one out. My Honda Insight has come out a few times, but I normally drive a Honda Odyssey. Just be careful going from the pavement to the dirt road, and don't go too fast on the lakebed.

No better place to go really high and its actually hard to lose a rocket on the middle of a beautiful dry lake bed. No wait for pads, great people, awesome fun.

FAA lowered max altitude to 17000 MSL

BLM campfire rules - no fire on playa, fire barrels must be raised off lake bed and ashes leave with you.
All ashes along with other trash have to be removed from the lake bed.

I mistakenly drove a Hyundai Sonata in from the north side. Took over an hour and by all rights I should have gotten stuck out there. After all that the launch winded out too. Fortunately I spoke with someone there and they pointed out the south entrance, seemed like just a few hundred feet and I was back on pavement.

Am going to try and make it there. Was at Springfest 2001 and loved it, except when the water sitting on the playa chased us out of our campsite, aided by the wind. Different site than this year, that year it was on the road to Searchlight, and was between Henderson and Boulder City.

I believe it was the Railroad Pass Casino sitting on the hill above the launch site.

HAha! Railroad Pass Casino/Hotel...that bar is the only place I can think of you can look down on the dry lake and watch flights from the comfort of a cold tequila and A/C. Met Frank Kosdon there too!

Man- I'd be saving that one! Without sounding like a groupie, I got one of his t- shirts from Dave Triano after he died. I still have a huge 29mm case with three reloads I'm afraid to fly. It's like a "J" or something and it's all over in .5secs. Frank was extreme.

I think Tripoli Vegas normally has Springfest in April, and it can be hit or miss on the Spring wind. The club moved Springfest this year to March due to a dirt race a couple of weeks later, but that move may be just what was needed. March *may* be about perfect. High temps in the 60s expected, light to no wind the winter norm, and lots of sun. If I wish it, it will happen, right?!

Actually, the last couple of years it has been in March. Once was rained out, the other I couldn't go.... before that I can't say for sure. Either way, I am looking forward to it..........
