Petty's heart stopped and he was rushed to the hospital, arrived brain-dead. Events in progress....

He is/was 66.

Now confirmed.

Really sad.

I was watching him in the Travelling Wilburys a few days ago.
Fantastic memories.

SO.

Farewell Tommy. Let's go flying.

Guy had more hits than Tim Dixon has rockets. I always like "Woman in Love" and "You Got Lucky" the most. But "Refugee," "American Girl" and "The Waiting" are also great. I liked the one he did with Stevie Nicks, too, and of course, the Willburies. Used to cover "Don't Do Me Like That" in my band.

So let me get to the point.
Let's roll another joint... and, head on down the road...
There's somewhere I've got to go.
You don't know how it feels to be real...

That was a mean looking Transistor in the video-

I remember arriving in Norfolk, VA during the summer of 1979, just completing my first duty assignment on a west coast Destroyer and looking forward to my new duty station aboard the newly commissioned USS Eisenhower. Before reporting aboard I attended Operation's Specialist "A" school at Dam Neck (Virginia Beach) and had some really fantastic liberty during the twelve weeks of instruction. At the Peppermint Beach Club down on the Virginia Beach strip a young lady by the name of Pat Benatar was belting it out during the weekends while across the street from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, there were two acts preforming at the King's Head Inn. The first was John Cougar later Mellencamp, and a group from Gainesville, Florida by the name of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers playing a song called "Breakdown". It ended all too soon. RIP my friend and thanks for the great vibes.

Pretty sad about this. Although I haven't listened to Tom Petty much in the last few years, hearing his songs again really brings back memories and reminds me of how great his songs were.

Why is it that as soon as a famous musician passes my opinion of him genuinely skyrockets...
It seems I just don't realize how great a musician or poet they were until they're gone...
Again and again...
I just don't understand this ...

Teddy, I think that sometimes it is hard to grasp greatness as it is happening. It does happen sometimes though. Many times though it takes time and perspective to evaluate someone or thing against history.

My example of this was as a youngster listening to Randy Rhoads playing with Ozzy. I, and most who really listened, pretty much understood how great he was. He dies and many others suddenly get it.

Then sometimes everyone gets it when it is happening. I would use Michael Jordan at his peak. The man was clearly operating on a level or two higher than everyone else.

I think we don't value things that are commonplace. We only value them when confronted with their loss. For instance, I never valued incandescent lightbulbs. Need a bulb? Buy a bulb. Don't think any more about it. But then when they said they were doing away with them, suddenly I'm out stocking up on them.

Then there's the whole intrinsic emotional need to honor the dead, probably because death scares us. We find ourselves praising the deceased at funerals, even though maybe we didn't think too highly of that person when he was alive.

Silly human race.

Strangely I have had "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" popping into my head most of this week. It isn't even my favourite song of his.

My earworm with Petty has been "Don't Come Around Here No More". Not even one of his greatest, but I still liked it.
