Thanks to some @$$H@ causing some problems in Shanghai, all flammable fluids are now banned from checked bags in China (despite being legally, and safely transported across the Pacific Ocean by two other airlines. The results?

My two bottles of CA glue (super thin, and gap filling), as well as my large bottles of epoxy were Shanghaied in Shanghai. My mom attempted to carry them to me here in her checked bags, but they were nabbed by the local transportation authority. Estimated value of lossed adhesives? $55.00 USD.

However, the tubes of JBWeld did make it through, as did some decals and balsa parts for a couple of Estes Cosmic Interceptors.

Thanks to Ed for the help and the parts. I wish it had a happier ending.

Sheesh. Can you buy some over there?

Sure... If I had more money, and the ability to read Chinese websites (My skills with the written language were mostly lost between the end of Mandarin 203 (in 2012) and arriving in China)(not taking into account that words like glue, adhesives, and epoxy, were never part of my language education).

Have you made any acquaintances that could help you?

Sure, a few. However, time is limited for their ability to look up non-work related things, and then they don't have enough of a background in English, to have the needed materials knowledge to be certain that they have found a locally sourced suitable substitution.

My wife can read/write Chinese. I've asked her to try to track down some Chinese made glues you can try. Imported glues are crazy expensive there. Do you have access to Taobao ? Or an acquaintance with access to Taobao? It's like the Amazon of China.

I can acces Taobao, I just can't read Taobao.

Given that the flash point of CA glue is well over 60c, it is not considered a flammable substance, according to most sources. Odd that it was confiscated as flammable. Accelerator is considered flammable, but no more so that certain personal products that are allowed to be carried, such as nail polish and nail polish remover.

That is true for epoxy resin and hardner, also.

Please seach 氰基丙烯酸盐粘合剂 (Chinese for CA) and 环氧树脂 (Chinese for epoxy) at www.taobao.com
I don't know which one is the right one to choose, but since they are not expensive, maybe you can try several and experiment to see which one works. The epoxy seems to be 'A' 'B' glue, where one is the resin, one is the hardener.

here are some to try, hopefully one of your local associates can order for you:

I'll have to check those out when I'm back at the end of the month. I'm currently in Beijing, and dont have my computer with me.

FYI guys, my son is back from China visiting (first time in 3 years!) and I'm working to support Jim in his rocket adventures in China. I'll have a wechat account set up by the week (they can't access facebook-remember China is communist/socialist-what ever 'ist' you want to call it!) I have a senior liaison lady (really smart with great English!) from a multi-national company helping me out we just put on a plane this morning and since Jim is traveling, that gives us a little more time to set things up for him. My son doesn't leave until the 27th so maybe I can get a kit smuggled over with him! Stay tuned for further K'tesh rocket adventures in China!

THANKS!

I've been hoping to publicly say that since Dave has been in touch with me, but it's been really hard to type on this phone.

I would like to say thanks to all of you folks for the support and friendship. Despite what they say over in other forums, this is honestly a Great group of people.

I can access FB here in China, but just on my computer (which I left behind in my apartment). While I'm traveling I'll check in when I can.

If you happen to send him two Estes 2.5" tubes to replace the ones China Post sqwysht, he'll have a Partizon instead of a Partlyzon. I'd be happy to cover the purchase cost, let me know :)

Thanks for the offer DH-I'll check my inventory first as I have a ton of tubes. I'm a regular rocket pack-rat! (Partlyzon- I'll have to use that-lol!)

Thanks Guys!

I'm in Xian tonight. Today my loss was a brand new bottle of No Ad sunscreen. My mom... Aka Emilda Marcos... needed to put her shoes collection in my checked bag... this evicted my carry on sized bag, which resulted in me trying to carry 450ish ml of sunscreen in my carry on bag. Security confiscated it. Thank God I remembered to move my Swiss army knife out of it.

Emilda bought another pair of shoes tonight... Now she has only 9 pairs with her plus the flip flops... I'm not joking here.

Normally I'd say there is a black market for sunscreen over there and it may well be true. It is fashionable for young Chinese women to be as pale as possible. True story: My son went out on a date with some pretty little thing and she insisted while outside on walking in his shadow. Mystified he asked why (or the Chinese equivalent of wtf?) and she replied: "It is not attractive to have any sun colour, We need to be as white as possible so we are pretty to men". Just so you know, China is more racist than we ever were. He has terrible stories of people of colour (any other than WASP, I gather) having a hard time being placed as teachers because, as one interviewer told the Black American applicant, of their "HANDICAP"! Another Chinese sad but true story. Your sunscreen may make an excellent gift to some inspector's daughter....she is prolly using the CA for her fake nails, too!

It is a shame that HobbyKing stopping shipping into China. They have a decent selection of adhesives.

So close, but yet so far. In the HobbyKing forum, they mentioned a lot of packages were not arriving in China after leaving Hong Kong.

I'm pretty sure they arrived, but.......
(China has refused to release pictures of their new all-balsa jet fighter)

One more thing I could use some help in getting or finding... Chopped fiberglass. I have no idea if it's available here.

Thanks!

Dude, come back to civilization !

Funny you say that. The more I explore China, the more I'm being told by people that I am gettinga raw deal from my school. I am seriously now going to look for better pastures when I get back. More later.

How long are you there for? I hope it is better than it used to be.

My contract is for a year... Technically it should be up in November. However, I didn't actually *start* work until late January, and that may complicate things.
