I raised my sister's children for 12 years. I did it because their father's employment made it more expedient for me to do it.

Now, the oldest boy is in college. He lives in half of a duplex I own and I knock of some of the rent so I can use the garage as my "rocket lab". His father, a good guy, shut down his business in South Padre Island because of hurricane damage and moved in with my nephew last week.

Today, Toby, my brother in law, hands me a check for a part of the rent. I asked him how come. He told me that he had been doing some work in the back yard and arranging things to his liking when his son stopped him. He liked stuff better the other way. Toby said he was the father.

This is where it gets good.

My nephew told him: "As long as you live under my roof we go by my rules!"
Toby decided that he better pay part of the rent so he gets a say as well.

When I think of all the time that boy rolled his eyes at me when I said those very words...

I like to think that when stuff like this (the first post) happens, that God is sittin' up there smiling and chuckling right along with you.

I hope so.

I should have mentioned the color on my nephew's face as his dad explained the situation was almost as priceless. I really wish I had my camera out.

He's a pretty good kid and, if the truth be known, he helped me to do some growing up too.

Only in my dreams.

I used to be fairly bright in a bookish sort of way but, post brain tumor, I struggle to stay above moron.

That still keeps you comfortably ahead of the majority of our elected representatives...

I'm also well ahead of slime molds and tapeworms but I consider neither those beasts nor the elected type much competition.

I may be damaged but I haveto have some standards!

Just remember no matter how bad your slime balls are.... be thankful you don't live in Illinois!

No offence, but I've always been pretty partial to Texas, particularly our handling of the legislature. THey are limited by the constitution to meeting for only 40 days every 2 years. Personally, I think that was a typo and it was supposed to be 2 days every 40 years.

"The life and liberty of no man is safe when the Texas Legislature is in session!"

I hadn't heard that before. That's probably one of the most brilliant things I've ever heard.

I'd heard years ago that a former president of another era (Teddy perhaps? maybe FDR) said that the worst thing that ever happened to America was when they air conditioned Washington. Before that everyone went home for the summer so there were at least three months each year we were safe...

One of the weird and wonderful things about rocketry is that it is one of the few things that can lure ME out of the air conditioning. I love south Texas dearly but climate wise, I was never more at home than in Greenland.
