I would never be able to use this hack as every time I mix up epoxy by the time I get done mixing and applying it I reach back over and it's already started hardening up, and I can't do anything with it.

I very quickly learned to get a slow or extra slow hardener. Sometimes I also do the spread it out on a paper plate approach to slow it further. I only use 5-min for small discreet tasks.
