CAD Software The iPhone 12 Pro has a LIDAR scanner. Is it worth getting to scan stuff into good 3D printing files.

I understand STL files are a standard for 3D scanning and printing and I think LIDAR tech can do this (Maybe most 3D scanners use LIDAR. Not sure.).

If anyone scans objects with a smartphone:

  • What smartphone model and app do you use?
  • How does the resolution compare to dedicated 3D scanners?
  • Compared to current smartphones, do you think the iPhone 12 Pro LIDAR can make files with a much better resolution?

I'm considering a phone upgrade for a few reasons, and maybe 3D scanning is a good reason.

There seem to be a number of 3D scanning apps for the iPhone 12 on the App Store. Probably worth looking through the reviews and see what people have to say there.

Here's an example of what I'm talking about. Seems to work well enough but maybe not yet comparable to dedicated 3D scanners.

I'm thinking dedicated 3D scanners can probably do a better job, but I'm not sure if it's mostly a hardware or sofware issue.

So anyway i finally got an iPhone 12 Pro. It has a LiDAR and I got to make a few STL files yesterday. Not great-looking but I should get better at this and learn more about how to make pretty scans as time goes by.

The experts indicate that dedicated scanners work better. I can't wait to see your results.

Willing to bet someone's working on a jig you print and place your iPhone into such that it works much like a standard carousel scanner.

What I need, to scan an object (like a LPR, or nose cone), is a small electronic turntable. I just found a few people-sized ones for $1000 or so. And then these small ones:

Variable speed would be great. I'd like to find a few more options before buying. It's not a complicated product so I'm sure there are many more out there. Not keen on the DIY option. Want to go straight to image processessing.

The 3D scanning bug has bitten. I'm not sure if my vaccine will make the smart side of my brain ignore the bite or if I am about to go deeper down a rabbit hole than I want to, but I thought I'd ask where you've landed on the subject (both iPhone and turntable).

Thanks,

Sandy.
