You may have recently received an email from a certain member here who invited everyone to a certain yahoo user group. If it only went to a few people it wouldn't have been a problem but we think it went to everyone. No, we haven't sold email addresses. The best we can think is this user took the time to go through the 1000+ list of users and email each individually. While I admire his efforts, bless his heart, the forum will not be used as a mailing list. Anyone caught doing this will have their account revoked. One of the nice things about this forum is users can come and enjoy without worry about getting spammed. We plan on protecting this feature like a mother bear protects her cubs.

Anyway, we wanted to appologize to everyone.

Hey, it could have been worse. It was, after all, just a Yahoo group, not herbal viagra or something. Someone does *that*, and there's nothing for it but to pull their bottom lip up over the back of their head, tack it down with CyA, cover their head with epoxy and wadded up paper towels, and vacuum bag it. (No, as a matter of fact I don't like spam. How'd you know?)

But you've got to wonder what goes through someone's mind to make them send out hundreds of individual emails to members of a forum where they would all see the same message if you only posted it once in public. Commitment is admirable, but it's no substitute for logic.

Good point but who ever it was probably thought that they were going to lose their thread if they advertised it.

Um, er, ok, this happened again. Same email, same guy. Before I jump on this guy with zero posts I need to know from the members. Did you guys receive this email in the past day or two?

Don't think I've had one - my Gestapo-grade spam filter might have 'seen to it' though! ;)

MY unofficial (not necessarily endorsed by TRF) recommendation is to turn email off in your profile, and turn on PM pop-ups. That way people aren't lulled into thinking their emails are getting thru and you are ignoring them.

I just got a second unsolicited request to join the Texas High Power Rocketry Association's Yahoo Group.

I guess I should lighten up, but this sort of bugs me.

It's a brave new World Wide Web... :)

Mike, did this come via a TRF e-mail?

For both of you, those e-mails were generated by someone using the e-mail button associated with your TRF profile. The e-mails came via the TRF server from another TRF member.

These guys have been very agressive in ther recruitment. I actually joined. Although I haven't visited much, others have commented that they have pretty decent discussions. This doesn't excuse the methods, but what is one to do?

Dick,
Like I stated originally, I don't like to be griping, this club may be a fine organization.

Overall, I am extremely pleased with TRF and its policies. I joined this Web forum for the lack of flames and such, a la RMR.

I get lots of modeling advice and techniques from TRF. Also, I see many superb models built by other enthusiasts. This place is a great resource.

The one downside of TRF is the many vendor posts, but hey, everyone has to make a living. I appreciate that TRF has a Vendors forum as well as The Coffee Table. Some vendor posts do stray in to other forums, but it must be a bear for the admins to be policing every little issue. Again, I love this place.

Respectfully,
Michael O’Malley

Absolutely no need to apologize. Unsolicited email is a concern and TRF doesn't want people bugging our members :) If lots of folks did this it could become a royal pain!

I got this one, too. I figured my e-mail address was somehow harvested from TRF. Not a huge deal, but spamming for members reflects badly on the THPRA group, IMHO. Yahoo groups are of marginal value and are poor for high volume traffic because e-mail readers do a lousy job of threading messages. It is hard to choose which topics to read and which to ignore.

Personally, I don't care whether the group is useful or not. What concerns me is the apparent use of TRF for purposes of spamming and spamming only. The originator of these e-mails has zero posts on TRF. Note that I don't think the spammer in question has harvested e-mail addresses. He's used the TRF e-mail feature...which is bad enough, but this doesn't give him direct access to your e-mail address.

Agreed. Maybe if I and others hadn't signed up they would have left TRF alone  EEK!

For what it is worth...
This morning I sent a standard REMOVE email to scraps1@consolidated.net
This afternoon I got an apology from Chuck Cummins.
From my limited viewpoint, this adds one point to the plus column for Chuck.

Hey guys my apologies for creating the stir. It won't happen again! For the record there are links to other forums including this one posted from time-to-time on the THPRA site.

We're such a small community and I was only trying to help. Again if I caused any aggravation please accept this as an apology.

Let's get back to rockets!
