TARC Question

I am volunteering to be a mentor for TARC this year. The (geographically)closest school needing my assistance also happens to be the HS I graduated from 40 years ago. I am not, and have not ever been, an active "alumni" member in any service capacity at the school. However, contest rules say that, in order for me to act as an official NAR witness of qualifying flights, I cannot be "affiliated" with the school. Should I decline this mentoring position altogether, or should I mentor without acting as an official observer, or can I do it all?

If anyone knows the answer with certainty, or can direct me to a reliable (official TARC) source, it would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks,

Jim Bartell

Jim,

"Affiliated", as far as the TARC rules go, means that you're not on the staff or faculty of the school, and are not a parent of one of the student members of the team. Being an alumnus doesn't count! And, yes, you can mentor and act as one of the official observers.

The contest manager is Trip Barber [email protected] . Drop him a note if you're not assured, yet. I won't get miffed. ;)

By the way - be sure and subscribe to the NARTARC mailing list. Lots of good information there, plus Trip answers questions very quickly on the list.

As a TARC team sponsor - thanks for volunteering to help with the kids and paying it forward! Without the NAR volunteers, we certainly wouldn't have the contest that we do, today!

I agree with Wayne's assessment.

For me, I won't be doing the official scoring because, well, two of my kids and my niece are on the team. Even without the rule preventing it, I'd have a friend do the scoring for them.
