Did the booster in essence stabilize dragging the upper airframe behind it, and then no main?

Yes on both counts. It buried the tube about 12" into the hard ground. The booster section is now 6" shorter than before the launch but it lived to fly again. Never figured out what happened to the upper section. Both the main and backup charges fired. The shear pins were still intact. I pulled them and the nose come came right out and the laundry with it.

Estes Ventris as it returned to earth after about an 1800ft. flight. Just like SpaceX. Well, most SpaceX boosters land like this.

In Soviet Union we "stick landing" the hard way! ( Yes, it landed standing on its head and not drilled in to the asphalt.)

We seem to have some confusing between “Sticking the Landing” (which IMO means the body of the rocket is at or near vertical with the forward section pointing UP), and other forms of landing which generally fall (literally) under two categories, Lawn Darting and Core Sampling.

Yeah, the Gates boys going away definitely cut down on the "what is this going to do" factor. Made some epic flights.

Ah, so your dear wife sews for you as well! Someday I hope to venture into the electronics arena. The clock is ticking on my retirement countdown... after being up until almost midnight last night to meet a deadline extended by one day, have spent the last two weeks redoing 2 months' worth of work done by a fellow who quit and then finding out it was pretty much a 100% "throw this crap out, pull out clean sheet, and start over....", I'm wondering if I'll last as long as I planned!

Lowtech 2 in a 2 stage flight E12-0 -> E12-8 flight to 1875'. Recovered the sustainer the next morning.



One of 3 tree landings I know about sense being a BAR. I am grateful this and one other were small trees. This is my daughters rocket, "Green flame" a AT Barracuda on a AT G76g-10 flown to 2200' at our local high school launch site.



The golf tee nose cone is ready for use. This was a single use md c6-7 rocket.
