I wish they wouldn't do stuff like this during business hours, I would LOVE to take my kids to this.

SPACE SHUTTLE ASTRONAUT TO VISIT MINNEAPOLIS CENTRAL LIBRARY

Col. Robert D. Cabana to Talk About His Space Missions,

Answer Questions, Sign Autographs at Free Programs

NASA Space Shuttle astronaut and Minneapolis native Col. Robert D. Cabana, inducted into the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame earlier this year, will talk to kids and adults at free programs at 10 and 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12 in Pohlad Hall at Minneapolis Central Library, 300 Nicollet Mall.

· 10-10:45 a.m. - Q & A session for kids and families

· 11-11:30 a.m. - Program for adults, Q & A session

Cabana will sign 8 X 10-inch photographs available in the lobby after each session. Tables will be set up with activities for kids, including making a star bookmark and constellation map. "NASA Brain Bites," a children's DVD with news, facts, images, and other information about NASA, will be given away.

Cabana graduated from Washburn High School, and his parents still live in Minneapolis. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from the U.S. Naval Academy and was a "Distinguished Graduate" of the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School. He has logged more than 7,000 hours in 36 different kinds of aircraft.

Selected by NASA to become an astronaut in 1985, he is a veteran of four space flights, logging more than 900 hours in space.

Cabana served as pilot on Space Shuttle Missions STS-41 Discovery (successfully deploying the Ulysses spacecraft-interplanetary probe) and STS-53 Discovery (deploying a classified Dept. of Defense payload and performing several military experiments).

Cabana was mission commander on Space Shuttle Missions STS-65 Columbia (conducting 82 experiments from 15 countries and six space agencies around the world in a record-setting 15-day flight) and STS-88 Endeavour -- the first International Space Station assembly mission.

He has received many U.S. military and NASA awards, medals, and decorations, and the De La Vaulx medal from the Federation Aeronautique Internationale.

Cabana is currently director of the Stennis Space Center in Mississippi.

Cabana is part of a team of astronauts returning to their home regions as part of NASA's "Hometown Heroes 2008" campaign to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the International Space Station and NASA's 50th anniversary as an agency.

"Hennepin County Library is proud to welcome Col. Cabana and join NASA in honoring him as a 'Hometown Hero,'" said Hennepin County Library Director Amy Ryan. "Space exploration has been the subject of countless works of fiction and non-fiction, and we're delighted that children and adults will have an opportunity to meet a real astronaut and hear about his experiences on four Space Shuttle missions."
