I would like to buy some nomex cloth to make my own blankets. This way I don't have to try and guess what size blanket I would need to order ahead of time.
Have any of you done this? Do you have a source?
I get nomex aramid cloth from Amazon. It's not as heavy as the commercial blankets. But as long as it's not in direct contact with the ejection charge it has been ok. I use it to make shock cord protectors rather than blankets, as I have quite a few blankets.
This piqued my curiosity so after a few minutes of Googling around the web I found several sources for fire “retardant” fabric - canvas of various weights, coated vinyl, laminate PVC for theatrical scrims - and fire retardant solutions for treating fabric. If you could score a military surplus flight suit you’d have enough milspec Nomex for dozens of chute blankets/protectors.
Be aware that not all nomex is created equal. Some is done in a knit weave and you will get blow through on that. I prefer 8 or 10 ounce. Never had a single issue with it. A yard is darn near a lifetime supply.
+1 for Pegasus AutoRacing. Ebay and Amazon are hit/miss on what you really get. The racing supplier is for fire suit repair, etc. My Dragracing friends put their trust in them, so that enough for me to trust it for model rockets.
