Does anyone know if this will be covered on television and if so, details on times and channels?

Watching from the air would be cool. I asked on there facebook page if the air space would be open to private airplanes and they never responded to my post. I'm sure there will be active traffic there.

Presuming they are doing this legally.... they need to have an FAA waiver. While the conditions of the waiver *might* allow for aircraft associated with the event to be in the air, in certain places away from the planned trajectory, (aircraft/copters for chase, airborne video platforms, medical team), highly unlikely that any private aircraft not officially part of the event would be allowed.

Perhaps it's just wishful thinking here.... Do any of the manufacturers have plans to produce the Evil Spirit in an all fiberglass kit?

There is a NOTAM in place that repeats through the weekend, but no apparent flight restrictions:

!TWF 09/023 TWF AIRSPACE MANNED ROCKET WI AN AREA DEFINED AS 1NM RADIUS OF TWF013017 SFC-7000FT 1609161923-1609182300

This NOTAM looks pretty much like the ones that the FAA issues for high power launches. Assuming that it is, the airspace will not be closed, but instrument traffic will be vectored around the event. Aircraft are free to use the affected airspace within the FARs.

Looks like fun! Hopefully there will be better video later. Unfortunately, of the few videos I have seen, they were all taken from more or less the same spot, and you lose the rocket in the sun.

I had forgotten he was going to attempt this until I saw it on the news the next morning. Really cool!

"A cutter sheared through the dog food can lids that were holding in 6,000 pounds per square inch of steam pressure"

Did anyone notice that the New Atlas picture gallery has a picture of the recovery system designers, and the photo sure looks like its Ky Michelson the Rocketman himself (scroll down to the 14th picture).

Good eye, that is totally him.

Wow I admit that I read this thread a few weeks back and kind of blew it off, but looking at it now that steam motor is a pretty neat bit of engineering, and this guy has some big ones to strap himself to it.

They overshot the landing site, pretty much the opposite of the way Evel Knievel did it.

Now they should "jump" over the Grand Canyon!
