The last hint in this Instructable sounds useful to those of us with less-steady hands. The author uses a string (cotton, not synthetic) screwed down at both ends to a board. The circuit board to be soldered is slid under the taut string, and the SMT device slid under the string, in it's proper place. Sounds easier than cutting tape to 1 mm widths, which I tried. Unsuccessfully.
Nichrome wire, maybe 32 gauge, would be even better than string as it's stronger, won't stretch, and won't burn if you hit it with the soldering tip.
