I would like the help of the group in attaining the following goal. I want to build a miniature probe that would pass thru the areas of my intestine that the traditional scopes cannot see. Here is a picture of my idea.

Interprobe01.jpg

My friends here have offered help in fighting my condition, well here is what I need:

A wireless miniature video "spy" camera like this one (two so I can have more resourses...)
https://www.youcansave.com/webcamsv.asp

Miniature white LEDs

A smooth clear plastic housing capsule to fit it in.

Someone that can help me do this by answering questions about voltage, component drains, etc.

Thanks!

I think I've seen something like that before. It was like a VERY small camera in a non-soluble gel cap. I think it would take 3 days to pass thru.

That is what this is based on, there is a limit to how big it can be and safely pass. It is just not a very realistic hope that I would have access to that one as it is still experimantal and not covered by my health plan, an idiot swallowing something he made is covered however.

I have one of those spy-cams, bought it from Boostervision . the camera will run for a few hours on a 9v battery.

bottom line (ha): not long enough to make the trip down your gullet to the interesting part. unless you have some way of remotely turning it on?

and you aren't gonna swallow it and the 9v, all that is just too big.

but if you get one, get the one with sound :)

you might be better off with a long piece of the right kind of fiber-optic cable and a white LED near the tip.

The idea is to alter the existing camera to fit my needs, but I need the camera to take apart and look at. The board might be trimmed down or cut up to fit behind the lens. If you look at the picture you'll see it does not use a 9V battery.

OK...But don't show me that thing after it's been retrieved...I don't wanna know!

I don't want to sound crass, but I really would appreciate it if someone could donate one of these wireless micro camera systems to me, you might end up changing the course of the future! I mean, you folks want to see the SHX-3B get released don't you?

https://www.youcansave.com/webcamsv.asp

By the way, I have stopped lossing weight and have gained a pound or two! Still difficult to eat though...

shrox

I would love to move to humboldt!
we keep talking about it...

glad to hear you are putting on weight!
if you need anything, PM me, i am a 215er too.
:D

Do you need the sound?

I hereby challenge everyone lining up for the SHX-15B
https://rocketryforum.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8285
to toss an additional $5.00 in... That should just about cover the price
of the camera...

Waddda ya say folks?

Thanks Brian. I would only need the less expensive one without sound, it would probably be smaller anyway. I found a source for the "headlights", they are tiny surface mount LEDs:

This little probe needs a name, something cute I guess. Any ideas?

Just a random thought.

That is better than "SHXButtCam" I guess...

shrox

...but it just isn't going to happen I guess. Is it just to scary?

shrox

Not too scary. People just need to be pushed a little.
Please post your paypal address. I will send $50 as soon as I know where to send it.
I have read another thread on this forum were people told about themselfs. Alot of BAs MAs ect.. Many with very nice jobs.
I am sure most of them are reading this thread.
I challenge all of you to match my donation!!!!
The camara is not the only thing Shrox will need.
Other building componants as well as some way to track where the probe is at. The images will need to be corellated with the location to be effective.
Maybe ultra sound? anyone have an idea here? or better yet access to such equipment?
Shrox, we get this thing going, you know how we love to see pics:D

Thanks Missileman!

I have talked with an internist about the idea. Because of it's size, the hardest part will be swallowing it, it would be easier to be slightly sedated and have a him literally push it (gently!) past the vocal cords and such. Once into the softer tissues of the intestines it shouldn't be much of a problem, although I might feel it in there.
There are plenty of things to figure out, like what kind of clear plastic will survive the 48-72 hour trip thru acids and other corrosives without getting scored or marred so the camera will maintain a clear image? How can I make the batteries last through out the trip, maybe have it cycle on and off somehow? Should I make a tiny little crew to go inside, like Rachel Welch in "Fantastic Voyage"?

I made a new PayPal account Friday. When it is confirmed I'll post it.

shrox

Don't give up on us that fast Shrox.

I'm with brianc...I'll throw in a few extra bucks with the SHX-15B kit. Add a PayPal donation link to one of your posts and I'm sure you'll get a response.

On the subject of clear image, I'm wondering how the camera is going to see through, well, opaque sewage.

Can you target the time this thing should be passing through the area of concern, plus or minus a few hours? You could have it sleep until it gets past the boring bits -- esophagus, stomach, etc -- and only start taking pictures after that. Then, since you're not exactly moving at warp speed, it only needs to take a picture once every 5 or 10 seconds, and can sleep in between.

And then you can tie the still frames into a time-accelerated video. :)

But the battery power problem is solved if you use an external camera with a more conventional fiber optic roto-rooter... is there a reason that kind of system has been rejected?

I was thinking about the need for clarity.
I would suggest fasting for a period of time before launching this probe and maybe take an acid reducer a few hours before.
Nexium is about the best if you can get it and Prilosec is sold over the counter.
I was thinking about a large glass of water to go along with the probe but if you are going to be partially sedated that may be a bad idea.
Power requirements of this camera will have to be investigated as well as newer high tech batteries.

My wife once had a colonoscopy where she had to fast and drink a 'magic
elixure' the day prior to the procedure. You might want to google for the
process and see if any applies.

Will watch for your paypall link!

Shrox,,

Not to minimize your condition and not to be critical but...Is this thinking really wise?

Sure we are rocket scientist but, I wouldn't want a rocket scientist working on my innerds!

No offence guys...they all seem like good ideas.

You may just be asking the wrong group for help here.

Now if you want to get a rocket out of a tree!

I am not going to reccomend that you swallow a big clear plastic bubble thingy.

sandman

So far nothing has been able to reach the middle of the intestines(other than exploratory surgery), the plumbing just too kinky and turny. I already had a colonoscopy and endoscopy, the tool just can't get it past the first few turns.

Eating would be timed to get the best view, just like the colonoscopy.

It is not a big bubble thingy, it is a small bubble thingy, same diameter as the camera they use.

Beside, who was time to wait, and what should one wait for?

Well, crap. No pun intended.

This is why I like paying my taxes in Canada; if you need exploratory surgery, we'd have you scheduled for exploratory surgery. Of course, you'd be on a waiting list anywhere from eight months to four years long, and you'd be bumped down the list repeatedly until your situation became immediately life-threatening, but hey. I know, we're evil socialists. But I digress.

I thought of another concern today. You'll need a transmitter, and I don't know of one that will fit (well, maybe the Palm Bluetooth module? but then you need to translate your video into a digital signal, which means even more control gear. Also, stay out of Starbucks during the camera's operation). The transmitter will need an antenna. The antenna's size is determined by the frequency; higher frequencies mean smaller antennas, but have a harder time punching through obstructions (like, say, 20cm of Shrox-o-flesh). Higher frequencies also present their own health risks; another word for extremely high frequencies is "microwave", with all the effects that word brings to mind and more. It might make your condition worse, or create a whole new condition. When you've found a transmitter to use, talk to somebody who really knows about radio and radiation exposure for advice on if it'll be safe to run whatever power level it uses inside your body for three days straight.

I understand that MedEquipCorp or whoever has a professionally made capsule that transmits safely, but unless you're using the same transmitter, it's not a good comparison.

Now even though I sound kind of negative, when I point out reasons your plan won't work, it's intended constructively. That's what I do. Every week I meet with two guys who come up with ideas, I come up with 50 ways to shoot it down, they refine their ideas, I come up with 3 more reasons it'll fail, they make another refinement, I find nothing, we all cheer loudly and move forward.

New idea: what if you gave this capsule a life-support tether? Might be a bit uncomfortable, but you swallow a capsule containing the camera only, and it trails a power / data lead behind it, back out your mouth. You swallow an extra 3" of slack line every hour. When the capsule exits, you cut the line and swallow it, then you can draw it out. You might be able to accelerate the capsule's voyage using a common laxative. This gets rid of all kinds of issues, but probably creates many more... please hack this one apart ruthlessly for the sake of improvement.

The camera system is wireless and has a transmitter built in. The reciever has RCA jacks to plug directly into a VCR or other video recorder. It is self contained and needs no external leads, that is the whole point, having a long wire or cord hanging out for hours would provide a literal freeway for infection and just is not really practical. And the unit would just not pass smoothly with a long lead trailing behind it.

I have been thinking about this for months, and have given pretty much every angle a full concideration or I would not bother mentioning it. I like to be thorough and complete before I propose an idea.

Check out the details of the system.

I have had an idea to consider.
First off I am assuming some sort of medical supervision during this proccedure.
You have already had endoscopes from both directions so the first and last 24 hours are not important.
IE.. after swallowing the batteries will only have to last 48 hours to see what hasn't already been seen.
Now lets cut that down some more.
Can this probe be inserted with an endoscope?
This would eliminate the first 24 hours and would get you right to where you need to start looking right away.

please excuse my ignorance, but what's wrong with you?
why can't the mainstream medical community help you?

Shrox,

My son has celiac disease, he basically went flat on the growth chart when he was 9 months old and the doctors told us that my wife and I were skinny when we were little so no big deal. But my Dad (a surgeon) kept telling us he looked malnurished. Fortunately our nurse ignored the docs and diagnosed it as celiac disease. Pretty common in European descent and common in the states too, just the physicians are poor at diagnosing it.

Celiac flattens out your intestines as an immune response and you stop absorbing nutrients no matter how much you eat, it can show up as IBS and other stuff. Once we changed his diet he took right off again, nothing short of amazing. If you want to go on a gluten free diet (no oats, barley, rye, wheat), celiacs must do this, I can help you. It can't hurt. I really suggest it for a number of people for a couple months to see if it helps all sorts of things.

I'm not so sure swallowing your own camera is a great idea, but I would be happy to discuss it here in the thread. I am an embedded systems/firmware/electrical/biomedical engineer and have a background in medical intrumentation/surgical tools as well as miniature devices for weapons develoment.

I worked with a pill you swallow to determine core body temperature. Basically it had a crystal that changed frequency slightly based upon its temperature. This was modulated and listened to with an antenna. We used it as a remote method for determining the temperature of blood in a centrifuge we were designing that made a fibrin sealant out of blood using snake venom.

have they done a contrast die study on you to see if you have any bleeds?

Take Care,
Ray

Please post more about this diet.
I have some major digestive problems myself, maybe this could help me.
Worth a try.
More info on this might just help Shrox
