Oroville, CA
I’m in California, my package starts out in Portland, OR, then goes north to Kent, WA, then north to Seattle, WA, before it starts going south to Stockton, CA. Now it has to start going north again to Oroville. Go figure, I’m sure it makes sense to the Post Office, collection points and distribution centers.

I know that I can mail a letter in Oroville, to someone else in Oroville, but the letter must first travel 26 miles south to Marysville, before returning to Oroville, for delivery.

I ordered something from Amazon in late Nov. It's current travel so far is quite impressive. It went from mainland China to Hong Kong to Japan to LA to NYC(Queens) to Jamaica to Miami. The last update was a few days ago and it was supposed to arrive yesterday. Amazon updated delivery lastnight saying it was running late and I could get a refund in a few days if it hasn't shown up. The crazy part of all this is that the package was handed over to USPS at the mainland China stop and everything after was USPS. USPS tracking says they're still waiting on it at customs and hasn't changed since Dec 4th.

is the 'new guy' expected to fix this?
The USPS, as currently constituted, can’t be “fixed” by anyone. They’re supposed to be an independent, self-funding entity - but when they inevitably run short of money they ask Congress for funding and/or increase rates. If they stopped trying to compete with for-profit package delivery/small parcel shipping companies, focused solely on moving and delivering nothing else except what fits in a standard rural delivery mailbox, pared down their workforce to match that function they probably could make revenue match expenses. But that will never happen - even with all the “cuts” they’ve made (in the government world asking for a smaller increase in next year’s budget compared to last year’s requested increase is defined as a budget cut) by closing centers and post offices, consolidating sorting operations, reducing employee benefits they’ve made next to zero impact on their biggest cost - which is salaries and benefits expenses. If anyone with any level of real control over the USPS was truly serious about increasing their effectiveness and efficiency they’d negotiate contracts with the other delivery services - they’d get a great rate considering the volume - for package delivery and cut the number of employees commiseratively. But nothing like that will ever happen - we’ll just let them bump along as is, providing less than stellar service trying to be everything to everyone, until the whole mess collapses under the weight of of impossible to meet legacy costs. Then we’ll cook up some other high-minded sounding government entity with a new set of initials with pretty much the same folks in charge with the same inherent flaws that’s supposed to be a new improved Post Office and start the whole cycle over again.

Current Postmaster General won't be leaving for awhile.
He is appointed by a Board which is heavily stacked now (like the Supreme Court).
As openings come up on the Board in a couple of years then maybe we can get a new PG in.

Go read up on the history of Post Office funding, and realize that it used to be fairly well balanced until Congress started messing with it.

I happen to have ordered a book on composite propellant formulations and making. It departed PA on 28th November, via USPS, and arrived in Australia on 6th December. Not too bad. I have still yet to receive it, and I assume it is OzPost that provide the delivery at this end. Maybe I might get it for Christmas :(.

[Edit] The package just turned up now. 12 days for 500 miles from Sydney to Melbourne.

I currently have 4 packages coming from different locations around the country that 3 weeks ago got marked as 'Out for Delivery', only to continue tracking through various USPS handling stations!

Then, suddenly, on the 11th ALL TRACKING stopped on all 4 of them. Still no updates, no delivery.

I just received my first negative feedback in 20 years on the auction site because item sent by usps took 14 days to go from NY to AZ :(

I always thought that it was absolutely stupid for the ebay system to allow that. They have basically unlimited resources of all types and could implement code to allow evaluation of 'seller response time' only independent of shipping method performance.

After we finish complaining about USPS, can you tell me which glue is best? ;)

My understanding is that there are 3 out of 9 vacancies on the governor's board. Trump hasn't bothered filling them but presumably Biden can.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Board_of_Governors_of_the_United_States_Postal_Service
Questions:
If Biden can't directly replace DeJoy (at least for a while), how miserable could Biden make DeJoy's life? Cancel the XPO contract? Cut all of his discretionary spending (including Club memberships)? Move his office to an outside trailer with broken heat/AC?

Reportedly, the reason why Bush/Collins required the 75 year pension funding in 2006 is so they can use it to pay off the deficit but then the housing crisis started in 2007. Sounds like the President could do whatever the eff he wants with the pension funds. Could Biden use the pension funds to fix the USPS?

I hear you. I have three different shipments that just suddenly stopped; if they were still moving on anything but a turtle, they would have been here by now. They have to be sitting in some parked trailer on the side of the road, lol. It’s real odd, because I placed an order with Amazon on Thursday and the post office delivered it yesterday.

Today's informed delivery notice.

Chalk it up to "doing the best they can with what they got".............

Lucky day today, one order was delivered this morning, and the other two actually updated and had moved further along the line towards my home, both due after Christmas, but that’s just fine.

Come on, we give up about 20 billion per year to subsidize the fossil fuel industry... Let’s not act like 27 billion over the last 30 years is some obscene number. We ask a hell of a lot of the USPS and expect it to outperform those already lofty expectations, but cry socialism when we hand them a fraction of what we’ve given private companies. Maybe some funding will finally be acceptable when we privatize the USPS?

I have sent & received mail every day in my business for 20 years.
I've lost more mail in the past 7 months than the previous 19 years.
I went to priority mail some years ago because gift cards to grandchildren as 1st class mail were "never found".
My wife and I have been making masks for all our extended family, their co-workers and the elderly that live around us. We've made about 800 in our spare time.
I spend $2.40 to mail bundles of them as 1st class. They are in padded envelopes but irregular shaped. I've mailed them several months ago to GA from VA. Delivery time: 2-3 weeks. They get tossed in a bin then sorted sometime later.
I just sent a Priority Mail package a week ago to FL. 3 day delivery. I give
them some slack because Christmas is close. It still hasn't arrived.
Priority Mail use to give me tracking info for city to city.
Now ALL of them show they left the main center 7 mi away. The rest I get states "in transit, it's running late"
You now have to pay extra for what use to be free tracking info.
I mailed 7 UPS packages ground on Thursday. All arrived within 2 days except one on Monday.
Our mail carrier normally finishes the route by our house at 8pm.
Now they finished at 2-3pm this week.
They sold their soul to get some of the Amazon deliveries. We all are paying for their losses.
I do not feel sorry for them.

I was threatened with "terrible feedback" on eBay the day before an undelivered package finally arrived. Took eleven days at domestic First Class Package rate.

I do feel sorry for them. Don't blame the carriers for the policies implemented by the political appointee Postmaster General, These include scrapping of sorting machines, large semis must depart on schedule (even if they are empty or are only partially filled), and carriers must end their shift on time (Note the word "overtime" is specifically avoided, although it is essentially a "No Overtime" policy).
These "cost saving" measures have effectively sabotaged the Postal Service.
Not saying this was intentional to avoid any political inferences. Make your own conclusions.
Combine this with the perfect storm of the Christmas rush, way more people ordering online rather than shopping in person due to Covid, and reduction in the USPS work force due to the virus and you can see what's going on.
Not the carriers' fault.

To take priority of Amazon,UPS and FedEx deliveries over my Priority Mail box is inexcusable.
My priority mail took 6 days to go from Alexandria, VA to Merrifield.. I could have walked there in half a day. Another 4 to arrive at the MD USPS center.
I was in the union and union workers slowdown work to get more hired.
But my Xmas card to my rocket vendor, mailed same day, arrived in just 4 days.

USPS has taken my media mail package that I mailed on Dec 10th, and has not delivered it yet as of today, Dec 25th
