BROWARD (CBSMiami) – An unusual discovery in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea early Sunday morning.

According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, a deputy on patrol saw a military explosive device that had apparently washed up onshore.

Deputies secured the area around the item, calling in the BSO bomb squad as well as the US Air Force.

Crews were able to safely remove the mine from the beach.

More of an excuse for major concern with this one since it was encrusted which obscured the markings:

Back in my USAF days, I had numerous opportunities to... liberate... a practice bomblet from a CBU. There was a spot between a couple of the shelters that was a practice area for EOD to simulate dealing with them, and they didn't pick up after themselves. I was sorely tempted... But didn't take any home. My old base is now decommissioned for military activity. I wonder if they ever bothered to clean that area up, and if not??? I'd also love to score a BDU-33 (say for a lamp). Even better would be a Mk-82 Snake Eye.

On missed opportunities to snag abandoned military property, a friend of mine in pre-med took a summer course which involved diving off the coast of Florida. He said he saw a small "jet" with swept wings on the ocean floor, one way too small to carry humans. From the description, it was likely something like this:

I told him I would have examined it to determine the required tools, left, got them, and taken the time to open it up to "borrow" a souvenir, preferably the turbine engine and controllers if possible. Of course, for his chartered excursion this wasn't possible and being an exclusively biological science guy it didn't even occur to him. They didn't bother to report it, either.
