Hello! Does an Estes E - G motor produce enough thrust to have it look something like the below (the thrust of a SM-3 missile). And how would you gain this effect?

A bunch of that is due to the geometry of the flame trench.

Try an Aerotech white composite motor for a fairly visible flame.

Flew this one last Thursday on a D12-3. Launching at dusk makes the flames more visible.

This is a good thread. I'd like to see other peoples pictures of flame launches.

Photograph it at dusk.

Although, the flame effect you described would be more to do with the rocket reaching full thrust before being released from the pad. Sort of like a rocket stuck on the launch rod effect. Just need a flame trench to redirect it.

How do you recover the rocket in night? A tracker inside?
(the rockets above are launched at dusk, not at night)

Night launches are carried out under specific safety rules, and must include a flasher to highlight its presence.
If you have a good recovery area, the flasher can be all you need, but a tracker is always good if you can fit it

Are you kidding....to get that look from your rocket you would need a flame thrower pointing up as the rocket lifts off....no engine will look like a SM3 flame through the under deck venturies ....come on :)

Trackers are always useful, but typically rockets must have lights to be launched at night launches. Generally there is a strobe in the nose, plus there may be other lighting effects as well.

So is the nose cone, or part of it, transparent? I've been meaning to ask about the possibility of having transparent nose cones.

It doesn't need to be transparent. An unfinished plastic nose cone works great with a strobe inside.

You can also go nuts with night launch rockets: Light Show.

Night launches are super fun. Attached is my most recent project. The clear bay is from a walmart toy lightsaber and 3 rows of strip leds. The sword is very close to a bt20. I used a fluorescent tube light cover in the past, the one I used was pretty close to a bt-60.

you can get a clear tube from Apogee. BT 60 & 70. I got one from amazon that's 2.5 inches. I also made a rocket out of a 3" clear acrylic tube. It's 36 inches long with lexan fins.

Plus you can get glow in the dark phosphorescence paint in different colors that are transparent in daylight...white is a good base color as it absorbs more light. And their are phosphorescence powders that can be used for ejection to paint the sky.

Led flashing strips are cool to. Bring a bright flash light with you or a bright led headband .

Plus you could jettison some of these:
