There is a guy at a local club that has one. Flys it all the time--something like 80 or more flights now.

I had a 4" Brutus. Check out Binder Design or one of the other rocket builders out west. When one of the Binder boys left Rocket R&D they built kits that looked very much like some of R&D designs. Jr. and Gary Buck were not happy. Just a small part of rocketry history.

I don't have the 5.5" Big Brutus, but do have the 4" Brutus EXT. The first high power launch I attended (Bong ~'94), Gary Buck was prepping his Big Brutus (the one you see in the old ads) for a cluster flight, IIRC 54mm J surrounded by (4) 29mm H's; prep took a long time and we left before it flew. Good looking rocket!

Indeed GP! I believe Scott Binder designed the Brutus for Rocket R&D. Scott went on to produce the Binder Design Excel, which was a 3 finned Brutus. Scott sold Binder Design, then came back with BSD rocketry; producing the Horizon which was essentially the Excel with squared off trapezoid fins. RIP Gary Buck. Wonder where Scott Binder is nowadays?

Welcome to the Rocket R&D Brutus Gallery on TRF.

This gallery showcases the Rocket R&D Brutus and those rockets derived from it. Particularly appropriate in this thread are the following:

Rocket R&D: Big Brutus (5.5")
Rocket R&D: Brutus:
Rocket R&D: Brutus EXP

as well as any upscales, downscales, clones, kitbashes or other derivative works. Even Goonies qualify!

I designed the Brutus for Rocket R & D in the early 90's.... then went on to produce the Excel and Horizon as stated above. Rocket R & D had been purchased by the Buck's, and had only a few old kits in inventory, so we came up with the Brutus to use up some tubing.... Still one of my favorite rockets. And Gary was one of my favorite rocket people. I'm still kicking in the pacific northwest.... flying rockets - just got back from LDRS!
