Good to use an octagon. A hexagon would have too much of a Separatist feel. Thier symbol was hexagon shaped in the Prequels and Clone Wars. This is a good guy R2 unit! No slipping to the dark side path! ;)
Nuts and Bolts, Nuts and Bolts, We've all been screwed....

Building the Stability Octagonal Ring... Step 2

Mock-Up and then External glue joints and adding Internal Dowels... repeated (8) times.
I let this dry about 10 minutes and then lay it back down flat on the template and reposition it back into position. It moves out of position quite a bit.

Wouldn’t that be a Pentagon?

An octagon is good Feng Shui. It will focus the good energy "Chi" to balance the rocket.

This is not mindsiming or feeling the FORCE running through the rocket.

George Lucas did not steal the Feng Shui concept for his movie as he is a Master creator and never steals other's work! ;)

Apologies to the pure rocket scientists as model rocketry is pure science and has nothing to do with silly mysticism.

Sooooo……the Force is Strong in this One?

Go Midichlorians!

"Without the midi-chlorians, life could not exist, and we would have no knowledge of the Force. They continually speak to us, telling us the will of the Force. When you learn to quiet your mind, you'll hear them speaking to you."―Qui-Gon Jinn, to Anakin Skywalker
Midi-chlorians were microscopic, intelligent life forms that originated from the foundation of life in the center of the galaxy and ultimately resided within the cells of all living organisms, thereby forming a symbiotic relationship with their hosts. The Force spoke through the midi-chlorians, allowing certain beings to use the Force if they were sensitive enough to its powers. In order to gauge an individual's potential in the Force, blood tests were used to estimate the number of midi-chlorians within the subject's cells, known as an M-count. Anakin Skywalker, the Chosen One, possessed the highest known count in galactic history—over twenty-thousand midi-chlorians—surpassing the potential of Grand Master Yoda and all Jedi.
According to the Sith Lord Darth Sidious, his Sith Master Darth Plagueis could influence the midi-chlorians to create life. In the New Republic Era, Imperial scientist Doctor Penn Pershing experimented with blood samples that he harvested from Grogu, a Force-sensitive youngling with a high midi-chlorian count.

Building the Stability Octagonal Ring... Step 3 The Following Day

Now that it's dry... pretty amazing just how strong this sub-assembly is.
Adding more glue. I've found a flat piece of wood works great for filling the gaps at the octagon end joints. Kind of lay it flat on both sides and squeegee the excess glue off.

Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good set of fins on the sides.

Attaching the Base to R2-D2... Step 4

I sanded the primer off the feet of R2-D2 to ensure a good wood glue bond... then applied the wood glue. Let that dry and then attach the (4) base supports.

Sooo, will we have a supermodern droid from a far away galaxy on a wood grain display stand? I think that would look great with the right tone of wood grain, not sure if you would need stain or not.

You gonna do some test pieces?

A Dark, black walnut stain might look nice in contrast with the white R2.

Damn the torpedoes!
Indoor/Outdoor Spar Urethane... Clear Gloss. I've used it for years on my outdoor P-51 and P-40 Weather Vanes. Really makes the woodgrain pop.
