I just learned about this offering (thanks to my Secret Santa victim's wish list) and now have a question. The board has a row of five solder pads. I can make good guesses what they may be for (firmware installation, production testing, etc.) but can someone who knows what they're for please weigh in?

Yes, it is the programming header. Pins are:

GND
SWDIO
SWDCLK
DFU select
VDD

They are 100mil pitch with vias. You can use pogo pins or solder directly to the pads. All of the code is open source on github for any hackers out there. Have at it!
