I have an idea for Apple, Microsoft, and Google. I call it the idiotic response filter. It would be highly useful and prevent many clashes on facebook, twitter, and forums. The filter would smartly detect offensive and potentially anger-inducing responses and thus edit them into more appropriate responses for the public.

Just kidding, but imagine a world without being offended. Then again, this would probably be censorship. People have a right to free speech and stupidity.

As my Dad says: "Son, you can't fix stupid or crazy".

I think it would be more incumbent on people to learn how to disagree without getting emotional. This is supposed to be the age of tolerance, but people seem to be getting more and more intolerant.

Concur, but that might be a utopian pipe dream based on experiences here.

... and make life far too boring!

Being offended gets you out of comfort zone.
Usually, that's highly annoying, but sometimes that can be really good.

    Indeed.

What you & I find objectionable varies between the individuals.
What I may find to be a minor inconvenience, you'll find to be a major issue for getting emotional, frustrated, needing a hug, and just ruins your day.

it, to me, just comes down to hwo we each deal with situations. Some have more "maturity" than others, having leaned how to deal with it

Those of us that have some years on us don't have to imagine it, we have lived it.

I've been watching Seinfeld episodes on Hulu. What a great show. It poked fun at everybody, mostly, the idiosyncrasies of the characters themselves.

That show would never be allowed on network television today. Comedy regarding stereotypical viewpoints of how some folks view ethnic groups, politics, religion, sex, etc. are no longer "socially acceptable" on network television.

    And that's a shame, IMHO.

As with many things, The Simpsons covered this in an episode. Lisa made an app that warned people of the consequences of what they were about to post online.

That would be a great world to get back to, for sure. I know you said you were kidding but I don't think the path is keeping people from saying, or posting, certain things which could offend someone. There's always somebody out there that chooses to be offended at something. They're just looking for something to get offended by and then raise a stink.

Very often someone will post their opinion about something, a second person will have a different opinion and post it too, and a third person will get so offended that they come into the conversation with full emotions, telling everyone that they should think a certain way or behave a certain way and if they don't then they're not being tolerant.

This world is changing in weird ways. In 10 years we will look back at the craziness today and wish we only had this stuff to deal with.

Can you imagine that someone like Don Rickles, who made a career out of insulting... well... pretty much everyone, could ever become popular or build a career today?

Oh, and can you imagine the reaction to Andrew Dice Clay? Sheesh.

When I wrote a mailing list discussion manager program many years ago, I included a "Twit" feature. If a member of the discussion group was marked by the moderator as a Twit, any posts made by the Twit were sent only to themselves and the others marked as Twits. The moderator could review Twit messages and send them to everyone if it they were okay.

This way the Twits were only bothering other Twits.

Business Week magazine interviewed me and published an article about the feature.

By the way, the old Fidonet rule works well on the internet today:

Don't be excessively annoying. Don't be easily annoyed.

Short answer, no. Longer answer, a) I'm not really sure who that is, and b) I do not *ever* watch any of those award shows. I would honestly rather spend that time in a dentists chair. Bleah.

I seriously considered patenting the idea. I got as far as talking to a patent attorney, but I didn't follow through.

Unfortunately, there are far too many ignorant people who find facts "offensive." We shouldn't allow most likely biased "higher authorities" to censor what we see, we should instead depend upon "smartly detecting" idiocy and trolling ourselves when we see it and simply ignore it. I don't how many times I've posted in forums "IGNORE the trolls and they'll go away" to no avail.

Internet Trolls Are Narcissists, Psychopaths, and Sadists
Trolls will lie, exaggerate, and offend to get a response.

I agree about those award shows, but this guy is brilliant! Look up his golden globe compilations if you want to see some of the Hollyweird "elite" get their feelings hurt.

He's got some stand up specials that are worth watching too. His discussion of Bruce Jenner left me with tears in my eyes from laughing so hard.

The report and ignore functions of the forum work very well. If enough people ignore a person, they'll know. Putting prior restraint on a person in order to protect them from themselves isn't a good idea in my opinion. Only way they'll learn is if they experience the corrective action of the group.

One thing that I have observed in my brief 53 years is that generally western culture has embraced the notion to be sensitive to offending. And yet today we are more offended than ever. It would seem to me that the more "sensitive" we become the more people are actually offended. I am not of course suggesting that we offend and be insensitive. What I am suggesting is the ideology path that we are on is clearly not working and instead of doubling down we should take an honest non - partisan look at this. Hence the problem, we the sheep are led by politicians and economic elite in every country and every political spectrum that basically lie to us for their own gain. Sadly I don't believe that their is a solution and that this will dog us until the end.

So sayeth the Sheppard, so sayeth the Flock. One of my favourite Porky lines, well part of it anyway.

    Baahhhhhh.

When one lives in a best in human history first world culture where even our poor can be morbidly obese, have smart phones, and HD TVs, some desperately need to find something to be upset about. The problem is that via social media we are now exposed to these losers, something which in the past we'd only have the misfortune of being exposed to if we had them as neighbors or coworkers. The fix for hypersensitive whiners is the same as for trolls - IGNORE THEM.
