Oh, no; quatloos are fine. The problem with the episode is just... well... nearly everything else.

In the mid eighties, my roommate (now my brother-in-law) and I used to refer to the quatloos that we'd use in the video game arcade, save up for the laundromat, etc.

Actually that does work. They are strong enough that the wheels go over them, and since they are narrow enough only one axil is off the track at a time, preventing derailment.
