I hate self checkouts.
That's like the company saying we don't care about giving personal service to you, all we care about is saving money.
I did a self checkout at the grocer's the other day because there was a long line at the cashiers.
Reluctantly.
I always prefer self checkout. LOTS faster, and I get to avoid small talk.

Hans.

Call me old fashioned.
:D
True story,
One Thanksgiving many years ago I placed an online order for a Turkey lunch plate for pickup at a local drive in.
In and out, no lines, easy peasy.
About 3 or 4 years later did the same.
Long line, half an hour to get to the pickup window.
Meanwhile the walk up ordering window was empty.
How times have changed.

I worked at a place that did the U-Scan self-check-out (Kroger, Sobeys's Loblaw's, HEB, Meijer's)

they did a study, and fund the self check-out are actually slower than a cashier, but the thought is that you are doing something, so the time seems to pass faster.
  • Remember, the cashier is scanning stuff all day long. They know where the barcodes are. You, on the other hand, flip the box / bag over a few times to find it, then scan it, then look at it, to make sure you scanned it right...
  • They also have a button or two to make things go faster (like keying in a qty, rather than scanning the 20 items of whatever)
  • Also, they don't need to wait for "place the item in the bag"..

mind you this was 20 or so years ago. And these have become a part of our daily life..

Then there are the products that don't have a bar code (like loose fruit and veggies).
So you have to do a look up and place the item to be weighed.
Cashiers are much faster at that.
Shoot, they probably have the stuff memorized.
Hey, I just thought of something.
What's to stop someone from choosing a cheaper item on lookup and applying that price to the item being weighed?
Nobody is monitoring what you're ringing up.
There's no self checkout police.
:questions:

While individually it may take longer due to lack of experience, the fact that I can typically get to a self-checkout register right away, or with at most one or two ahead instead of standing on line for a live cashier with 4~5 customers ahead of me is a time saver....

Actually, many have cameras that are monitored. I've been hung up when they think they see something and an attendant has to come over and check things.

"place the item in the bag", plop..
"take item you just put in the bag and scan it", What ?
"place item in the bag", I did that already
"please scan all items BEFORE placing them in the bag".....................

At my closest Wal-mart, after about 9am you will being waiting , waiting, waiting, and waiting. Only one cashier for the store and everyone is in line for the self checkout. Many times a machine or two is Down. The more numbers it is after 9am, add more 'waiting' to the line.

If I need to go, as many things cost much less then Kroger, I get there before 8am. In the summer I got there at 6:30am. Then you have a few machines open when ready to checkout.

We have an Aldi nearby , it's new and clean. And so far I can get in and out of that store in no time. They are the lowest cost, but lowest variety. Only just what you need...

Nah, it's the company saying we value profits over associates and customers - period. Despicable!!
