Well I finished it up today, 5 days from start to finish which is a little long for me but still pretty quick...

Deviated from stock in a couple areas. First I did away with the piston in favor of dogbarf wadding and a heatshield, mainly because I wanted to install the extra rail buttons I had on it and I just couldn't stand the look of the 1/2" lugs on it.

The only other deviation was in the decal scheme PML had in the paperwork.

I was showing a friend at work the decal scheme and he said that it makes no sense, so I asked him what he meant. This friend by the way is in the air force reserves and loads these things onto jet fighters.

He told me that the Yellow stripe indicates a live or armed missile. The blue stripe on the other hand indicates a trainer missile, so the two together don't make sense. The bronze stripes indicate the propellant area or something like that.

So I did away with the blue stripes as most of the pictures I found on the net of live missiles on jets didn't have the blue stripes.

The Chrome stripe is somewhat of a mystery. I found two pictures on the internet that "appeared" to have this stripe or compartment all though they weren't the closest or most detailed pictures so it was hard to tell, all the close detailed pics I could find were absent the chrome area but I liked the way it looked so I left it on..

Well anyway here it is completed ...

very nice, that thing is beautiful. I love scale rockets

Oh one other tidbit.. finished weight is supposed to be around 78oz...

Mine came in at 93 oz with the 38mm adapter in the rockets..

I like epoxy fillets...LOL

Looks great too me. This is what I say to anyone who is worried about the stripes being wrong: :p

Wow - that's great! It looks awesome, and thanks for the stripe explanation - makes alot of sense. By the way - I'm glad you left the chrome area. Even if it's not scale, it makes the rocket alot easier to track at altitude with the reflectivity of it. Can't wait to see launch pictures!

i have a 2" PML AMRAAM on the bench right now.. i havent really started it yet, tho, b/c if have so many other things going on;) Still I almost never finish a rocket in under a month:D
I was wondering aobut the stripes myself... every pic i get seems to be a little different:rolleyes:
thanx for the pix! cant wait to see launch pix...

Fireman...

EXCELLENT looking model bro!!! and the rocket ain't half bad either ;)

j/k man...you did a great job on the Amraam4! Good call on the colors; I have been looking for a cross reference chart of what the diffferent band colors meant with no luck. Instead, I just go by what I find at the museums. Is a launch date set yet? Which motor?

Once again, it looks great! :)

Carl

That is a very nice rocket. PML 4 inch rockets just come out looking so sweet. Oh, and good call on the piston. I've also been upgrading my PML models to the extended KwikSwitch to accommodate some EX hardware I've acquired.

I'm thinking J-275 in this bad bad boy, waddaya think?

--Lance.

I am with Lance on that call...I got my L2 on a PML Amraam4, Adept RAS2 Altimeter and J275 combo...flew another one that same afternoon...just a way cool sounding and looking motor. Something about the bigger motors, they just sound different!

Carl

Thanks for the kudos guys I like the bird alot..

Piston decision was a hard one, as I have nothing against the piston....just wanted to use my standard rail buttons..

Suppose on the next one i'll get some acme conformal rail buttons, i think that's what they're called...

Anyway she could go up tomorrow but I think i'm going to hold off.. The Thor is first up on my big rockets list for flight so it will probably go...

And that will give me time to get a good clear coat on the amraam before she takes to the air..

I211 seems to be calling to her for the maiden flight then after that we'll see...

Call me "Johnny Come-lately" but you might want to try Matt Stum's suggestion on railbuttons.com where you glue a couple of popcicle sticks together & then drill a hole for the rail buttons & then surface mount it to the tubing. I did it on my PML Phobos & It works beautifully! In fact, it gives an extra measure of safety by assuring that the QT will *never* rub against the rail. And I didn't drill into the QT so the piston works flawlessly :D

I've included a picture as well. You can see the slight standoff from the QT. (Unfortunately I used black railbuttons to go with the black paint so it's a little difficult to see...)

Jason,
Thought you might like to see what one looks like on a I211.
My Amraam's maiden flight on an I211 at Fire on the Farm April 1999.....Larry

yeah, there should be a rule agianst posting rockets that are really nice, because now I really want to buy one.

This could be a good thing....or a bad thing :)

Welcome to the AMRAAM club!
I must admit I have had the most fun with that rocket! And I have never bothered to paint and detail it!
You can see it on the "stlouisrocketry.org" website in the picture gallery under "unknown 4" amraam"......
I flew everything from an H123 all the way up (so far) to my
level 2 cert a couple of weeks ago on a J275! My altimeter was beeping off 3905' when I picked it up WAY across a couple of fields down wind. My good buddy and fellow Amraam fan,
Larry Mills, assisted in the recovery. We had to navigate a couple of levies and drainage ditches in the effort. Larry has about a dozen Amraams from small minimum diameter cuties all the way up to one of those 110% scale mamas!

Looks good, Bro...
Now I guess I have to get one of those, too...:D

didn't see the pic. Do you use the whole popsicle stick, or just a part of it?

Brian, this is a thread form 2004!! TRF has gone thru a few updates since then, so the pics are probably long gone..

And, i believe all the posters (the people) above you have either left / no longer post on TRF, or are under a new alias..

bummer,
well I'm thinking of using that process and use full ones (I have hobby versions of popsicle sticks) on four sides for visual balance, and drilling one for the rail button.

You can also just add a washer or two. I maidened mine on a J350W and it's gone up on a few other J's, nothing smaller. No scuffs or anything to date. It just has an extra black nylon washer underneath. Mine is the Phenolic though, not QT.67402713_10157539917963200_4866820939964219392_o.jpg
