Popular Mechanics has an interesting internet article here about the Parker Solar Probe to be launched in 2018 to fly within 3.7 million miles of the sun far closer than the planet Mercury. In fact the probe will be in the solar corona. Although, the surface of the sun is about 10,000 Deg.F. The corona is on the order of a million Deg.F.
