I've been trying all kinds of designs and materials for making my own chutes. From my very little experience, I've found the more rectangular box shape works the best. Using a garbage bag as the chute. Has worked pretty good so far. I do have to find better strings to use. The ones I'm using seem to tangle very easily. Can anyone give me some tips on designs and materials? Thanks Mike

If low power, what you mentioned should work just fine. I have used parachutes exactly as you have described with great success. As for string, nylon string works great (A.k.a. heavy kite string). Make sure when using trashbag parachutes that you use some masking tape on the holes for the string. Doing this will ensure that the string does not rip out of the parachute.

I would not use these parachutes with rockets that are flying with an engine larger than a "E".

I like 3-ring-binder / hole punch reinforcements, one on each side.

Braided fishing line is pretty tough & slippery, but I'd avoid monofilament.
