I have been looking for a replacement for Krylon since they changed there formula eliminating the re-coat any time feature. I found this Rust-Oleum product the last time I was at the Wal-Mall. So I picked up a few cans and a couple of Estes kits out of the toy dept.
NOTE: The High Build Primer is in the automotive section. The Specialty Lacquer is with the rest of the rattle cans in the paint dept.
First I built both kits according to the instructions using Elmer's glue and then filled the tube groove, wood grain, and other imperfections with Elmer's Wood Filler. I wipe it on, then wet my finger and smooth it out.
After that dried I sprayed a couple of coats of the high build primer let it dry over night and hand sanded with 380 grit 3M sand paper. The I filled any imperfections with the wood filler. I sprayed another couple of coats of primer and sanded again.
I sprayed three coats of the lacquer recoating after 30 minutes or so. I let each individual color coat dry over night. The base coat was solid white on the multi colored Taser Twin.
I was very please with the results. As you can see in the attached pictures it leaves a very smooth glossy finish. I am going to spray a couple of coats of the clear Specialty Lacquer once I finish with the decals. I'll post pictures when I finish.
Overall this is a good inexpensive product that drys fast and provides the ability to recoat anytime. The only drawback is color selection. I could only find White, Black, Red, and Clear. I still prefer the Duplicolor automotive spray cans but there more expensive and are harder to find. The Rust O' Lacquer will fill a void that was left by Krylon and I am glad to see it works as advertised.
