Hi all, Does anyone know of a good source for inexpensive auto body paint, especially online? It's always easy to use rattle cans, but every once in a while it's nice to use a spray gun and do a nice job. Thanks!

Get this stuff at local auto parts stores for cheaper than paint + shipping, unless you have Amazon free shipping: https://duplicolor.com/product/paint-shop-automotive-lacquer-finish-system It's pre mixed and ready to spray.

Good stuff here: https://www.tcpglobal.com/Automotive-Paint/Restoration-Shop/ Hard to beat their prices on the lacquer, but you have to thin it yourself, and a kit of 1 quart paint and 1 quart thinner makes 2 quarts ready to spray, so choose wisely!

Or here: https://shop.thecoatingstore.com/main.sc

Most of us use lacquer, although some use the enamels. The urethane is expensive and requires not only that you know how to lay on paint, but also high quality safety equipment.

If you really want to get wild, try something from here: https://www.paintwithpearl.com/

Thank you so much for the great suggestions!! I really appreciate it. These are all great ideas!

banzai covered the least expensive options. TCP global has a lot of supplies. ive used their restoration shop line of paints and, imo, theyre pretty good for rockets. a pretty good selection of colors, too.
one thing to remember when ordering online: your monitor wont show the true color of the paint that's being looked at, but it will be close.

True that! TCP global has a paint chip board for like $5ish. That and mixing cups and lids were the first things that I ordered from them. After that, GAME ON!

My 4" diameter 6' tall MadCow Super DX3 took less than 1/3 quart of paint for 4 color coats. Since it comes as 1 qt paint/1 qt thinner, making 2 quarts of paint ready to spray, you'd better be committed to that color.....you're going to have it around for a LOOOOOOOOOONG time. $5ish for a color guide can save you from a $50 disappointment.

That's one of the benefits of the pre-mixed Duplicolor stuff. $20ish gets you a mixed quart, which would do 3-4 similar sized rockets.

Don't forget the clear coat. Or the primer.

I find the Duplicolor primer more than good enough.

I spray 2 coats, dry overnight, wet sand the fuzzies, dry overnight, spray 2 more primer coats, dry overnight, wet sand to 400grit, dry overnight, and then spray color and clear, wait a week-ish, polish, wax, done. YMMV

I second the Duplicolor paint and Autozone/Advance auto parts stores usually have it too. I applaud your desire to go beyond the rattle can /backyard paint job. Post up some pics for us of your rocket after painting.
