An 8080 microprocessor. Not familiar with the date code. I'm guessing 1373 means day 137 of 1983. *Somewhere* around here, I've got the plans for building a small 8080 computer, including the code for the boot ROM. I've got sooooo much obsolete (meaning "useless") computer stuff I can't bear to part with. "I might need it some day!".

When I started teaching in 1979 the college had just bought a 32k memory board with on-board BASIC, for their 8800B computer. Board was a cool $1000. Stupids (me included) didn't know how to access the BASIC until a friend of a colleague, who was a computer geek, started messing with it. Flipped three switches and BASIC pops up. Lots faster than the paper tape loader...

You can tell by the guy's eyes (or at least by the way his helmet is turned), he's concentrating on the line he wants to run. He's only looking a few feet in front of the bike.

What you can't hear is him saying "ow, ow, ow, ow, ow, ow...", as he hits every little rock sticking out of the wall.

It is a trick us photographers use when the flow of the image can be improved sometimes by reversal. It is not normally done if there is any writing in the scene, or other obvious cues.

The earlier 40 pin DIP (dual inline package) microcontrollers were made of ceramic, because they hadn't got the epoxy packages strong enough to be inserted into sockets without breaking in half at that time. Later they improved the epoxy, hence the proliferation of the plastic DIP packages.

It was probably one of the very early prototypes or pre-production units, based on the date code. Remember this is very early in the microprocessor days. The world's first microprocessor, the 4004 (4-bit!), was only introduced in 1971.

I looked at the wikipedia article on the 8080 (the same picture is also there). It says the chip "first appeared" in '74. I'm not arguing, I'm just explaining why I posted what I did.

I am guessing ceramic packages would have all but disappeared by that time. 40 pin epoxy packages were prolific around 1977 and the ceramics almost never seen then or after.

For some reason the light and shadows make it look P-shopped to me, but it could be a real car staged in a town somewhere.

The configuration of the car and the number are wrong for it to be one of the actual John Wyer Gulf cars that ran at Le Mans, but back in the day the race cars were actually driven through town to get from the garage they rented to the track.
