Well it was outside the 5 mile buffer. The timing may be a bit late though.
 
For those interested, this is being discussed ad-nausium on rmr. True or not, or if true, legal or not, this can not be good for the hobby. Hope they find it was a flare shot from a boat, or ANYTHING but a rocket. I do know the FAA got with my NAR club and our FAA contact is helping them find out what happened (if anything).

rmr is a real trip. There are a lot more people on rmr than on this forum and there is lots of good info posted there. The problem sometimes is extracting the good stuff from the off topic rants, on topic rants, flame wars, vendettas, grudges....gee someone chime in and let me know if I missed something. Still, it's a really good resource.

There is also a binaries newsgroup alt.binaries.models.rockets for photos, etc. Fewer news servers carry this group and not as many messages are kept on the servers due to the size of the posts (no binaries allowed on the other newsgroup).

If you don't have a news server (most if not all ISPs do) you can also go to https://groups.google.com/ and search the groups (not just these two). The other oddity on the binary group is it occasionally picks up porn due to automatic posters keying on the 'models' part (methinks).

Finally, in case somebody doesn't know it, Rocketry Online https://www.rocketryonline.com/ also had a HUGE amount of info, including a good reference library (INFOcentral), message boards, auctions, etc.

I frequent rmr and ROL as well. I like this forum because it is more cordial and a has friendly atmosphere. A thread like 'Retro Rockets of the 50s' probably never would have made it on the other groups. They all have their place.

Gotta' agree!! This forum is much nicer and laid-back. Post something to rmr and you may get your head handed to ya'!! Still, I read rmr mainly for the laughs.... it's amazing how many flames, vendettas, etc are going on at the same time. Good info is out there on rmr, but ya' gotta' work at it to find it!!
 
Shortly after 11 September, 2001, the FAA rescinded all existing flight waivers for all activities related to amateur rocketry for an indefinite period of time. And they said that all it would take to make that decision permanent would be one (just one) incident.

The deal is that the Airspace above the United States and it's territories is owned and operated by the Military branches of the United State's government -but the FAA is allowed to control it at and during times when the military is not.

Somehow, whatever humor you guys may have found in that report has managed to escape my imagination. If I have upset or irritated any of you by saying so, please forgive me.

None here either. I usually deal with serious things with humor though. I was deadly serious with my post.

I didn't see anything wrong with the distance, after all it happened 12 miles outside the airport. Our field here in Salisbury is like seven miles from the Salisbury airport. We have no problems and we are even in the approach pattern for helicopters. The guys will tell you we've had to stop launching on several occasions while Blackhawks cleared the field.

As for altitude, 3000' is nothing. I had Wal-Mart specials easily reach that altitude and unless I misunderstand the rules I can launch them until my heart's content without FAA waivers.

The only thing I did see was the time it happened. I'm guessing 7:10PM is well after sundown.

I will acknowledge that it is me but not that I have a fat head. :D

That picture of the Blackhawks is them on the departure pattern. When they approached they were pretty much right over us. But even on departure they are close enough to be dangerous.

I wanted to shot one up and play smokey SAM with them but Ken wouldn't let me. :D

Atens, GA, heh? When LDRS is held again at Orangeburg, I just might!

Oh, and I did stuff it several times today - once in a nekkid rocket. All went well and I didn't even blush!
 
I guess LDRS only gets chosen year to year. I think Tom Binford said he only can host it on a year when the 4th is on a Tues or Thurs, when the sod farm workers get 4 consecutive days off. I assume he will try the next time this occurs. I hope so, since that is my only hope of getting to LDRS.
