In all seriousness, thank you for the kind words.

Another one of our club members had the same thing happen to his L3 attempt rocket and this was just days before LDRS. It was crushing for both of us, but we REALLY worked insanely hard to get our rockets repaired in time.

If I wasn't honest with this, it would belittle what he went through since it was worse than mine.

Unbelievably he won the second biggest raffle prize! $300 from Chris' Rocketry!

I think we are great examples of how not giving up and giving your all can change your fate.

Finally and honestly, one of the most rewarding things was meeting the people at LDRS and seeing all the cool rockets, so I don't care if it rained.
Ken,
No surprise here at all..
You are just the nicest man in the world and a pleasure alway..
You must have lived through great adversity to get where you are today..
I am fortunate to call you friend..

I had a little repair job on one of mine too. About 3 weeks before it (a Madcow 4" Frenzy) landed in a tree. The recovery put 2 short zippers in the upper and lower body tubes. But that was small potatoes compared to what you had to fix. I had it with me, but didn't get a chance to even take it out of the box.

I'll be honest, I was a little disappointed that I didn't get more flights in, but there were reasons for that. I spent some time with my friends Neil and Dan helping with their Nike Smoke and Patriot, both of which were scrubbed due to weather. But it was interesting being involved with those projects, even in a small way. Plus they are good people, so spending time there was not disappointing.

One thing I didn't anticipate was how long it would take to recover a rocket. Sometimes it took me over an hour, even when I saw it in the field! The walk around to the Oasis was a time killer! Plus sometimes I had to wait there for a clear range to go pick it up. That's not a criticism of the organizers. Just what it was. It was organized and safe, which is good. Their goal was also to keep flights going, which they did fairly well.

And of course there was the weather. That just complicates everything and takes time to deal with.

I've been to Red Glare, but this was my first LDRS, and it was much bigger. I'd do some things different next time, but have no regrets.

But none of this means my wife and I didn't enjoy ourselves. We spent time together and with a bunch of people from our NJ Club who went. Also met a few people from here, and chatted briefly with some of the vendors that we all know and respect. Met a few good folks from URRG when I was helping to set up on Wednesday. And of course we saw lots of great rockets and flights. I did get 5 good flights in, and got all the pieces back in the right quantities! That's more than a lot of people can say. Plus I saw an astronaut!

I won't be going to California next year, but when it comes east of the Mississippi again, we'll likely be going.
Now that's what a big national launch is about..
You got flights in and get to hang out with folks you only see but once or twice a year..
It's all about the memories with the other like minded people..
Good on you Eric..

This is what I got from Saturday (full names blanked jic):

Ldrs raffle prize. Hey Teddy , crazy motorcycle man here. In my haste to leave Saturday afternoon before the rain came , I missed picking up my Loki Special Prize ( 54/2800 ). Does it still count? I have the ticket still to confirm.

Eric,
1-- That ticket # was pulled for a Loki mystery prize.
No where was it noted what the "Mystery prize" was.
There where multiple items it could have been, but to say it was a specific item isn't correct..

2-- I'm a flyer from way back.
I used to enjoy the raffles at launches more than anyone.
To see someone have a winning ticket # and not collect it gets me, I'm truly sorry.
The rules posted clearly state that any winning ticket # will remain until 11am the next day.
Not a week later because a pic of the white # tracking board was posted online.
That's a flat no fair.
But Eric, that ticket # was called 4 times !!!!!
3 times by me and once by Tim the Wildman L. of Wildman Hobbies when he was kind enough to come LCO for us for a shift..
If you didn't hear the # called I understand.
But 4 times ??

A huge amount of people volunteered their minds, their efforts, and their backs to help URRG make this launch happen..
There are raffle prizes specifically donated to be raffled to the volunteers..
There are some leftover unclaimed raffle prizes from the main raffle..
Most of the leftover unclaimed prizes are small items, I saw in the box of my truck, an Estes kit, a Nadine calendar, a Nadine pin, a rocketry handbook, a Tripoli hat..
There's a few more, i'm pretty sure theres still an Aerotech rocket kit too.
None of this has been jived out yet..
We will jive out the volunteer raffle in the next few weeks ( quite possibly at the next launch ) with the complete list of volunteers that we have compiled..
Please understand,
To say this launch was quite the undertaking would be the understatement of the year..
Also, I have been donating to raffles for two decades, I've been a part of this clubs raffles, internally for a few years and externally as a flyer for easily almost a decade..
This is the biggest raffle I've ever seen..

I will say it till you I'm blue in the face..
THANK YOU so much forever and always to all of the wonderful generous prize donors..

Eric S.
This isn't done yet..
I'm going to see what I can do for you..
Heyyy,
How bout this, I'll give you a Onebadhawk $25 gift certificate..
Good ???

Hey Teddy, thank you and your team for arranging the raffle, I know how tough, hard and even confusing it is.

Sorry if I've added to any of the confusion!

You are correct Teddy, and I assumed from a message Scott wrote, that's all. Like I said in my other post, I don't expect to receive anything and you are 100 percent correct with everything you said. I was in the proverbial kid in a candy store moment. The volunteers did a great job for sure and the weather was the only negative I can complain about.

Ha,
See,
You just proved my point, lol..
Ken,
You're the nicest man ever ever..
You're making me almost sorry that I had that conversation with your mom in law and asked her to torture you a little..
Almost, lol..

And you didn't add to any confusion..
I wouldn't call it confusion,
I'd call it wishful thinking, lol..

Eric, please man..
I sure do remember winning something super cool and near freaking out about it..
Dun worry,
I will figure a way to get you a nice seriously cool consolation prize of some sort..
Just give us some time to jive out the volunteer raffle..
That's super important..
Man,
You all should see all those folks breaking their backs setting up and tearing down the field..
And don't forget,
( I know this from my own set up that's a lota work )..
Setting up is cool, you're super psyched about the launch to come..
Tear down is just tough, you're done, dog tired, and hot, and the launch is over..
Tear down is just nothin but the work..
And these folks do it for nothin but just to help..
You know what they DO get though ??
Even more of the camaraderie that's the true essence of the launch..
What you guys were eluding to before..

Not to worry folks..
We're still working on all..
It just takes a bit to dig out..

( I think I just set a record, I shipped an order that was like 11 days old, lol..
I never do that )..

Teddy

I originally booked Country Charm for myself, but later my family decided to come along. I was apprehensive since my wife normally doesn't like to do any tent camping (possibly hates)...especially in the rain!

Well, we got a great spot with a lake view and near the Rec center and my family LOVED it. Our joke was that the rec center was our cabin! 😆

So I'm super thankful that they had a great time there despite the rain and I can't recommend it enough.

(Our "tent" - note that they asked us not to park on the grass if it is raining to avoid ruts.)

Wow! An overland setup on a great Toyota, Err... Lexus :D

My Friend and his wife have a similar setup on their Tacoma with the special metal cap with the tent on top with the ladder like that.

Hi Team. I wanted to say super thanks to the flyers and everyone that was a part of this event. 21 committee members pulled heavy to make it happen. I really enjoyed seeing a lot of those we don't get to see too often and got to catch up. Thank you to the TRA bod and seeing Woody was amazing. Thank you to all those that volunteered the amount of help we had for this event was greatly appreciated. We will be pulling and handling the volunteer raffle during our next meeting and be posting and contacting the winners. This is always done post event as it includes all the volunteers and take down crew. Thanks again everyone and look forward to getting a little flying in this year.

Thank you Larry,
I meant to say that, I don't think I really got it across..
The volunteers..
The shear amount of people that volunteered to help URRG pull this launch off..
The shear amount of work done by so many..

Thank you all so much..
Larrys right when he's always using the term "Team"..
So many people did so much..

And yes..
Morgan is the queen of the mike, without a doubt lol..

Teddy

I don't remember a volunteer bin after we took everything down.. not sure if my name got in there!

oh well, had fun non-the-less!
I never saw a volunteer name or bucket, or whatever. I assume that if you did a shift, they put your name in automatically somewhere, somehow. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I was told that when you return from your volunteer assignment, let them know and they'll take down your assignment slip and put it into the raffle. Was a great idea and it made sense to me.
Gee, wish I had been told that before. I worked the setup on Wednesday morning. No idea who we should have told when. Guess I'm not going to win that one. 😥

There was a flyer setup two parking spots away from me. He came over on the Saturday asking if I had a manual for a PrefectFlite StrattoLogger CF and, if I did, could he borrow it. I did. He used it and returned it.

I didn't catch his name, but if he's here on TRF and reading this, please say hello and how did your flight go?

I did 2 stints and signed up for 2 more that got cancelled Sunday. My reward was getting to drive the quad with a BFR out and watch it get set up and fly successfully.
I will happily give up any prize to whoever it was that packed up my stuff Sunday morning!

If you saw a 6' tall guy walking around with a 4'10" black lady, Saturday afternoon, you saw me. With the gal who was my first kiss.😘 Okay, we were in first grade but it still counts, right? ;) I dated Joy for a while during college and re-met her at my 50 yr class reunion. Invited her and her brother to LDRS to show them what has made me tick for the last 30+ years. They were suitably impressed.😲

Kudos to you guys. I have not been able to entice a single individual to a rocket activity of any kind, either in my family or out of it (my Dad doesn't count, since he always did rocketry stuff with me).

My family used to come with me to local launches, but stopped years ago.

This time they came and my older sister as well. They were all amazed and my sister in particular, and she shared pics with her friends who were also amazed.

A few days ago my wife asked me for a rocket to build and decorate. 😊

Describing the hobby, people tend to look at me like I've lost my mind... Until I show them some of my rockets, or they see some of the larger ones at a launch go up. I've shown some of them pictures from LDRS too. Then they start to realize it isn't quite a hobby just for little kids (although that's what we feel like sometimes). I've also been lucky that my wife has shared in it with me, going to launches and even building her own rockets.

In fact, here's a few of her rockets.

Her "Harry Potter" rocket (scratch built) just flew well at LDRS on a G68, but we can keep it low on an F for our local small field.

They look fantastic! I particularly love that spaceship looking one. Is there a build thread?

No, no thread. It's actually a V-2 kit from asp (24mm version). She wasn't interested in the idea of a scale model of a Nazi weapon, but liked the shape of it. So she added the fin tip "pods" (bamboo skewers) and the rivets (leftover from my Flying Machine). If you do a search for rocket clipart, that paint scheme comes up a lot, which she likes. I printed the stickers on clear "paper". She did all the building. I did the paint to her specs. She flies it on D12-5's and it goes quite well. The only thing I don't like about it is that there is little room for the parachute. Have to use a plastic one instead of a nicer nylon one. But that's minor.

Edit: the picture above of it launching was probably a Quest D16.
