More of a flight report really :)

I showed up late for today's launch as I was teaching rocketry to a small group at the 4-H Octoberfest in Andover in the morning.

My wife (Kathy), her brother (Mike), daughter (Jen) and her boyfriend (Adam) came early with a range store and the tent. In tow was a long time friend (Dave Nichols) who had been out of this hobby for many years and got reintroduced to it when my daughter got his kids into it :)

Ill post a couple of pix here, and will up load the rest this weekend.

Here is a beautiful 1.75 upscale of the Freedom Forge Missile :)

Bill is a great guy :). He usually stays until I leave, cahtting about stuff. So that makes him and I the last people to leave the field. He has some interesting designs, especially with his staged fatboys. He had an interesting one to day the spun out of control, bounced around on the ground, and then the sustainer shot off at an angle in a corkscrew pattern ;).

Jim, see my Super Glotova launch?

Ok, here is my initial report.

I flew a total of five rockets.

Yulya's I-ROC - H180-6W
Astrobee D - G80-4T.
Magnum - J357 + 2 G64's.
Super Glotova - H128-6W + 2 F40's / H128-10W.
Super Tube - F24-4W

The I-ROC was a perfect flight. Astrobee D's G80 had a 1 second delay, so the nose sep. All was found. Super Tube had a picture perfect flight with its F24-4W motor.

The Magnum flight was interesting. The plan was all three motors to start on the ground. Instead; it took off with two G64's... slowly climbing off the pad...and started arching towards the woods. Then the J357 decided to kick in... and the Magnum had a safe flight up to 1800' above the woods. It landed in a tree. After I was finished launching, went abck with the clubs 35' pole, and it was just long enough to reach the shock cord. Took three grabs (and many tries between that) to get it down. Only damage was the leading edge of the body tube, where I twisted to the pole to grip the cord. I'll just cut that end off.

The Super Glotova had a awesome flight. Take off was perfect... all three motors were thrusting before it left the rail. The booster got some blast damage, but there is still enough meat on it to be reusable. The sustainer suffered a Sep. The alt bay and the top landed safely under shoot, but the lower part cam in hot and core sampled up to the forawrd centering ring. I will have to cut off the tube, and replace it with a new tube.

Throughout the launch, I helped many people out... and certified two people as L1, and my friend Nikita certified L2 with his PML rocket on a J350. Thanks to Neil, the rocket was found and recovered :).

More pics and videos coming soon :).

My turn. Launched all the new birds - the three Solar Sailers (the 13mm launch pic was blurry, but the flight was uneventful), The "new and improved RikRek" (photo below), and the 1.75 upscale Freedom Forge Missile (photo above). Also launched the Maximum Overdrive on a D12 this time, as I have the 4x40 streamer for it now, recovery was uneventful. The kids got in a few launches as well.

Lost the 24mm Solar Sailer to the tree gods :p (F21W with a 24" chute - should have used a smaller chute)

The RikRek is the tail end of a Rickter Recker. I lost the front end last time I was at Amesbury, but kept the back and just added a nosecone. With three C11s it just SHOT off the pad to 800 ft, but even with the longer shock cord it took a bite out of the nosecone on ejection. Jim suggested staggered delays in the engines next time. Note: after the SS loss, I switched from a 24" to a 16" chute for this one; recovered OK.

FYI that's me with the two FFMs. The bigger one has TTW rear fins and a kevlar lead back to the CR-80-60, and flies on C11 through F21. The little one is serial number 12 :)

The shirt was slightly modified on request from my daughter :) (It usually says "attitude") She's in the grey sweatshirt in the background right next to the FFM175's blue fin.

Hey cool! Theres one of me on there!

Proabably the first time you saw a picture of someone wearing an AMW "Got Color" T-shirt holding a rocket kit powered by an A8-3 :D Seriously, my Magnalites put off more smoke than that motor :D

Cmooooonnnn, Doug! I wanna see the videos I took (*looks pitiful* Dangit, I suck at looking pitiful. ).

[subtle] Seeennnndddd viiidddeeeeoooossss toooooo NNNNNeeeiiiillllllllll [/subtle]

I suck at being subtle too.

Howbout blackmail?

Send me the videos or ill... ill... well... um... how does "or else" sound? (*goes back to knitting Kevlar vest*)

Um... Running out of options here...

Oh well. Send em to me when you have a chance ;) Full lenth is fine, as long as you send em one or two at a time. Our computer is too pitiful to handle more than that at once. .AVI format is the only thing it can handle, btw.

I really need a new computer. :(

So many great photos taken with my new Minolta camera. I was using Kodak High Definition 400 ISO film, and I can say that I am not impressed with that film.... anyway, the photos came out nice, and I have so many I can not show them all here; but here are my favorites that have not been posted elsewhere, and the rest can be viewed on my site at https://n3tjm.crosswinds.net/Oct22004/.

Our precious Neil. What will we do without him? He takes pictures, video tapes, and finds lost J rockets :D. BUT WAIT!!! Order within the next 60 seconds, and we'll throw an A8-3 in for free ;).

My "Yulya's I-Roc" takes off with a H180-6W.

I helped Bob Mattaliano certify Level 1 with his PML rocket flown with a H128.

My Astrobee D takes off with a G80-4T. It was more like a G80-1T though.

Joel Rogers likes my new turret on my Super Pad. Strong enough for Robert DeHates rocket with a J480 Blue Baboon motor! Joels comment on the Pad... "NICE  " .

A Loki H144 motor! Awesome flight. Needs more tracking smoke though...

Heck, I'll be in t-shirts till probably end of november! It's only supposed to get down to 29 F tonight. That's what we call "brisk"

Gotta get the air conditioner out of the window so I can get the fan in there! :D

I got to fly a bunch of my rocket too. Nothing as large as the ones that Doug posted, though.

NASA Pegasus clone - 2 flights on B4-4 and C6-3
Astron Spaceplane (36 years old) - 2 flights on A8-3
Goblin upscale on a D12-5
Goblin on a D12-5 (lost in woods)
Goblin downscale on a C6-7
Astron Starblazer on a A3-4T (30+ years old converted from Series III engine mount)
Phoenix downscale on a C6-7
Orbital Transport Laboratory on a B4-4 (32 years old, picture is my avatar)
An unnamed rocket that carried a folding internal glider on a C6-3(rocket and glider performed perfectly)
paper Soyuz on an A3-4T
paper Mercury Redstone on an A3-4T
paper Juno I on an A3-4T
two stage paper Midnight Express on B6-0 to A8-5

Not too bad a day. I lost one and only the booster on the Midnight Express sustained any damage.

at the end of the day 468 flights and a great time was had by all I did notice one group had three generations of rocketeers in it the line did get kinda long for a launch pad at one point. and I have to thank Jim for waiting for me to purchase my rocket. My nephew spent quit a bit of time telling his class what he did over the weekend (so I was told) the teacher asked his mother for a few details. the fat boy was recovered froma bush and is retired as it truly was a scary sight to watch it hit the ground under power and then leave in such a hurry, (great flight after the booster was disengaged from the sustainer).

Here it is along side of the Mercury Redstone and Juno 1. There is an engine casing to judge size.

The escape tower was knocked off at the Tewksbury launch and I haven't put another one on yet.

Bob,
Those are some nice looking paper models. I want to build the Mercury Redstone and Juno 1 after I finish my Astron Ranger. My job-hunting search keeps getting in the way of my model building! I drove up to Warren, New Hampshire and snapped some pictures of a Redstone missile on display there. This winter I will build a true scale model, right down to the rivet holes.
It was a pleasure to meet you at the Amesbury CMASS launch.
Regards,
Mike
