Take a look at https://gigatron.io/He actually sells kits for this computer (and a few other things) on his web page. I bought the complete kit and spent a couple of months of evenings/Saturdays building the thing. It takes a lot of work and a bit of troubleshooting, but I think it was worth it!
I added some hardware to reset the micro-step counter to zero as soon as an instruction is completed; this saves a few clock cycles compared to his version. I also added an 8-bit ADC.
Wow! When THAT is a consideration, we're taking about extreme accuracy which this system apparently provided.One issue during development was twisting of the driveshaft during moves, due to high acceleration/deceleration.
