Into the Mid-Power Realm with our next release.

The inspiration with this kit is not unlike the Sirius Rocketry Saturn V, in that some years back, when I built the original in homage to the old Estes USS Atlantis kit, as an upgraded and "refitted" version, (folks reading HPR for some years will remember the articles on both versions) some of the same people that inspired me to kit the Saturn V, also said that I HAVE to kit this one!

To see the history, go to the USS Atlantis pages of David J. Miller.net and go to the Atlantis pages to see the upscaled original, as well as the "next generation" upscale refit, which was the inspiration for this kit.

The kit is a LITTLE bit smaller than the HPR version, and it is actually a downscale, but not to the scale of the original Estes version. This kit is about three feet long, built solid and detailed, and flies on BP D's and composite E's and F's.

The kit features Laser-cut 1/8" Plywood parts and centering rings, Kevlar shock cord mount, 24" mylar chute by Rockethead Rockets, FOUR full-color decal sheets, Vacu-formed plastic detail parts, and more. Only the instructions have been the major delay as it is a skill level 4-5 kit, but it is gorgeous!

More parts in the box than the Estes V-2, a challenging build, and a lot of fun to fly! Retail will probably be a little less than the V-2, but you will get a TON to parts and a real challenging build and a great value!

Now we almost know what the cost is, but we want to continue making neat kits like this in the future, so of course we need to make a little amount of profit to make up for our (part) time and our Sirius effort of bringing out some neat kits. In comparison to the V-2, we think our price point will be about right, but keeping that in mind, what do you think?

Very slick!

I need to stay out of this forum. My pile of unbuilt rockets is growing faster than I can park them in trees or bury them in the ground.

I know the feeling Bob!

I have a basement full of Flis Kits, and more, and don't even have time to build my own designs! I watch them being built by the likes of Stones and just wonder where all my building time went....

Oh, yeah, like Jim Flis and all the other great folks here, we are designing some neat things for you. I think Jim, and many other manufacturers here can say one thing...the neatest thing you can do is build out kits with the same labor of love we put into them! Jim, Shrox, Rockethead, myself and more love seeing things we created for everyone come together! We only wish we had the time to build the darned things ourselves!!!

MERRY Christmas to all the fellow (and GREAT people they all are!) small but passionate Rocket manufacturers!!!!

Man, ain't that the truth!

So when will this beauty be available, I want one. Maybe someday I'll actually find the spare time to build it.

Well, it should be quite soon! The very latest will be at NARCON, but we have dragged our butts long enough, so we hope for well before that!

Our very own Forum Moderator Kermie just got his shot at proofing the manual tonight, as I sent him a PDF. If the darned thing makes any sense to him, the final parts order goes in. We already have stacks and stacks of laser-cut parts, finished decals and such we would be bagging except for the final "HOBBYIST APPROVAL" (kermie!!!") Then they should be getting ready darned fast...

I do put up the question again at this time, keeping in mind the value of a bigger and badder bag of parts than some 60 dollar kits, just what everyone is comfortable with. Keep in mind that it helps to release even more kits like this!

We WILL have a TRF special as well Just for all you fine folk!

Dave

(Stones, finish that darned Saturn already!!!!!! :) Just kidding!)

(edited because I never spell right the first time....to use a phrase I have seen elsewhere.... "PIMF", or in other words "Preview Is My Friend!"

Jim, thanks for the laff! The instuctions are those things that we must pay attention to to make them somewhat foolproof and whatnot. I rolled on the floor knowing that you and I are in the same neighborhood on that respect! but ain't it fun!

BTW, I look at my ever shrinking inventory of Flis Kits in the "warehouse" and wonder if I will ever find the time to buy and build a Grissom for myself! Might just have to send more kits to Stones and Kermie to do that dirty work! But ain't it fun? You and I are that old breed, and I bet we could banter back and forth with the words to "Convoy..." (another thread, but you will catch up!)

The Merriest of Christmases to you Jim, and mucho looking forward to seeing you once again at NARCON! God bless!

Take care, and thanks for being you!

Well, hmm...at Sirius, we do LOVE scale, and I do have a couple of quality ideas in the offing, just have not decided which will be next. After two complex kits like the Saturn and Atlantis, I may want to turn to less complex scale for a bit. But less complex only means in instructions and assembly, the insane attention to detail will still be there.

And they probably will be low to mid-power offerings. As a HPR guy for the last 12 years or so, I still like something MPR that is large enough to be fun, but can punch up on a d-e-f-g, and not have to travel 100 miles to the nearest waivered launch, so we probably will have a few more offerings in that area depending on the success of the Atlantis kit. We did do this one MPR because we wanted to test that demand, and there will probably be some LPR offerings as well.

So there are a few possibilites, just have not decided which will be next. I guess a lot depends on sales of the Saturn and the Atlantis, as the capital from one kit gets invested back into developing the next kits as we grow....

Our instructions are also a place where we may wnt to cut back a bit to release things faster, those are always the most time-consuming and least enjoyable parts of development. Like for the Saturn and Atlantis, the instructions are quite detailed, but the market in MPR and where we are going I may not have to have so much detail in my instructions, in fact, Kermie thinks I may even dumb 'em down too much. Heck, if I could spend half the time on the manuals, the releases would come twice as fast.

What is the opinion on instructions? Do the experienced rocketeers like to work from step-by-step detailed instructions (known as CYA every time), or do you like to do less reading and be more visual with just an exploded view and basic instructions???????

Jim, sir, you always have a laugh for me and you are always spot on! I do like to finish a prototype before I go on with the kit though, it gives me an excuse to build something, but I hardly ever fly it until all the pictures are done!

Your basement is probably like mine, so many things you want to build and so little time.

Looking forward to NARCON again, it is shaping up to be an even better event this year. Your participation is definitely appreciated!

...I am not retired, just have an insane need to fill every minute of my spare time with bringing smiles to faces and keeping that imagination thing going on....If I were retired, I WOULD take one hour a day to build something!!!!!!!!! BUILD something Jim!...But I know, you must get a kick out of seeing your creations come alive just as much as I do...like in this thread... https://www.rocketryforum.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=12890 ...it is fun to see what people do with your work, and how they get excited about it. I think that is why you and I are in this?????

Qmodeling does the best instructions I have seen. Most of their manuals are posted on their web site ( https://www.qmodeling.com ) for preview.

Some people pick up information better from pictures; for other people, the words are more important. QM does a great job on both. The instructions have both clear illustrations and detailed wording.

Myself, I lean more towards the pictures than the words. Good line drawings are usually easier to understand than a photograph. Unfortunately, it is much easier to create digital photos than it is to draw good illustrations, so few small manufacturers do the illustrations.

Thankis for the input! We do lots of isometric line drawings, and they are pretty detailed. From what you say, the pics may speak louder than the text. This is what I am looking for, and I welcome more opinions. Thaks Bob, that is helpful! Now if we can get a few more to chime in that would be great!

Great shot of the Atlantis in flight, Kermie!

From that angle it looks more Klingon than Federation, though. (Fed ships usually have their warp nacelles sticking up and Klingons have theirs hanging down.)

I wonder what it would take to turn Atlantis into a Klingon ship? New decals, of course. Change the circular saucer section into something more triangular, mounted opposite the nacelles? Add a bulge in the nose cone? Replace the sensor with a few disruptors? Hmmm... many possibilities.

It was a beautiful, slow takeoff, which made it easy to get the pic.

Amen brother. That is exactly what I'm looking for. "Large enough to be fun" is the operative phrase.

I'm really glad to have discovered your company via TRF...when it's time to spend big money on a big, detailed Saturn, it'll be spent on yours. Promise. Just can't promise *when*!

Well, you probably mised it until now because I have been preventing "leaks" so to speak until it was a little closer to be ready to go. TRF's very own Kermie has been helping us out doing some proofing of instructions and stuff, and saw the prototype early on. (THANKS Kermie for some of your beta-testing help!)

It is based on a BT-55 sized airframe. It features Laser-cut 1/8" lite-ply parts, Vacu-formed parts, Four full-color waterslide decal sheets and more! I'll be releasing more pictures as it gets a little closer to release!

(edited because I never have time to proof as I type!!!! :) )

Oh, and BTW Don, thanks for the pictures for the NARCON cover that you sent through Gabe! (I have been working on the Program cover, logo, etc., in addition to the Sirius stuff. Should be a pretty neat cover. Are you coming to NARCON this year?

If those decal sheets are the same quality as the Outlander decals that I got a while back, then I'm going to be very happy!

I'll be keeping an eye out for the release of this kit.

It looks just like the kind of model that I am partial toward (the futuristic "space plane / starship" kind of model).

Same decal stock, same decal print process as for the other decals. You should be happy with them!

I'm anxious to see the finished cover art.

We won't be at NARCON this year for the same reason we've missed almost all the national events. Last year Terri had a fairly serious accident and was confined to a wheelchair for several months. She now walks with a brace so she can't ride in a car for long periods of time. She also can't drive, so I can't go and leave her here alone.

I am sorry to hear that Don. Being the good hubby that you are comes first! :) After all our wonderful wives put up with us all the time! We'll do our best to give you a good plug at NARCON. I understand that Terri did and sent the graphics to Gabe that I will use, she does great work! The best to you and your family over the holiday! and I am sure we will meet up soon!

Another teaser here, just a decal shot for the manual, but it will give you a good top view....
