Common XenForo terms and vBulletin equivalents

Our old forum software was vBulletin (VB) and it has been replaced with XenForo. The goal of this post is to clarify some common features that have different terminology on the new software. We can continue to use the familiar lingo (posts, PMs, etc), but the XenForo links/settings uses different terms. This post will help translate the difference.

  1. Messages: These are what vBulletin calls "Posts". Messages in XenForo are simply the images, video, and text that you have added to a topic.
  2. Conversations: These are equivalent to "PMs" and "Private Messages" in vBulletin. In XenForo, you can send a message to a particular member. Some groups can send them to multiple users at a time. If you have any pending, you will notice a number by the envelop at the top right of the screen.
  3. Alerts: These replace the "Notifications" in vBulletin. You will see Alerts in the top right corner of your screen once you have signed into Rocketry Forum (The bell or alarm symbol). They will notify you of changes to the threads or topics you are watching.
  4. Watched Threads and Watched Forums: These replace what vBulletin calls thread or forum subscriptions. XenForo calls watched threads / forums.

How to Create or start a new Thread or Post
You must have an account to post. Once you have an account, creating a new thread is easy. You have to first click on the forum title or thread that you want to post the new thread. It is important to make sure you are in the correct topic or thread or your thread will be off topic. You will see the topic or thread title in an indigo box in the image below.

Once you have entered the right topics list of threads or topics, you need to enter information in the following boxes:

Post a new Thread.png

  1. Post Title: Enter a short descriptive title for the new thread or post.
  2. Post Text Box: Enter the text, images, and/or video in this box.
  3. Post Tags: This is optional, but by entering tags, you will improve the odds of being hit in a search. Consider these like adjectives that describe the contents of the post.
Once you have entered the information in steps 1-3 above, hit the button "Create Thread" to post the thread.

VIDEO:
The following video will walk you through how to do this if you prefer video.

Replying to a Message or Post:

Posting a reply is as simple. If you want to reply to a discussion thread without quoting anyone else’s post, simply scroll to the bottom of the discussion thread, enter your text in the box marked “Write your reply…”, and choose Post Reply.

Old Thread to edit or add elsewhere:
[Insert Image]

You will see this in the bottom of each post. If you don't, then your permissions do not allow you to post.

Hitting Reply will bring you to a quick reply box. Type your message, and then hit "Post Quick Reply". This will allow you to post a basic message.

Hitting reply with quote will automatically quote that message, and open up in a quick reply box.

The third button is for a bulk quote. For example, say I want to reply to 5 posts, but I don't want to copy them all and quote them manually, then I click that button on each post I want to quote. Clicking the button will make it look like this:

[Insert Image]

You can click as many posts as you want. Then hit the big grey "Reply to Thread" button in the bottom left or top left corner of the page. This will quote all of the messages.

The final way to reply to a post is by hitting this button:

[Insert Image]

This will sometimes allow you to quick reply, and sometimes it will bring you to advanced. When you have typed your message, look at the following buttons:

[Insert Image]

you can hit Submit Reply, and it will post it.

Hitting Preview Post allows you to check if images were inserted correctly, or just to check if the post looks right.
