New Tech tracking systems

I've lost too many rockets! Looking for new tech tracking systems ie: license free GPS signal to locate downed rocket, etc. Not the old TV antenne reciever and licensed radio signal transmitter. What's out there that's somewhat affordable? I've checked RocketHunter...they may have one next year....anyone else?

One idea I have been toying with is to use 2 Garmin GPS/FRS units . These have a way for one radio to "poll" the other every 30 sec. The radio in the rocket sends the one you are holding its current position ane your unit will show you what direction and how far away the rocket unit is.

Range is about 2 miles. Street price about $150.00/Unit

You do not get the the cool data that a full blown GPS downlink system would give you, but you should get your rocket back.
