Hey, it's all about choices
Another social effect I've poked my science into over the years, the blind insistance on what they mistakenly assume is freedom of speech, and against what they mistakenly call censorship.
More often what they actually value is having people see them saying they value the higher principles. But they tend to do that in places where the most others can see them saying such things. Rarely do they actually conduct their lives like that, and rarely do they recognize the contradiction since the "saying" is usually being done in a virtual reality which they tend to believe has nothing to do with real life.
The uncivil think this way, but there are others who are perfectly civil who do also. I can't abide that sort of duplicity. When I went to NARAM and didn't find anything going on at the hotel, I could have gone to the r.m.r dinner. I chose not to, because unlike the duplicitous I believe that what you say is what you say, no matter where; there is no "just on the net". I'd have only gone to tell them so. And that would have been a waste of time. My son and I chose the much better course, a New Mexico style restaurant and a drive back to D.C.
IIRC, Jerry posted something perfectly on topic and reasonable here and was promptly followed up by others who must have started doing what his detractors on r.m.r. do, because the mods put a stop to it pronto. And I appreciated that.
It's a shame people put so much stock into protecting their right to be a jerk on the net when there's so many more important or rewarding things to do. Rockets, frinstance.
