A few months ago I decided that I'd set up a website to show some of the photos that I'd taken around at rocket events around the UK.

Nice website Mike...... how do you do the "152 days until UKRA 2004"??? Do you manually change the days left or is there a program or sub-routine that does it for you? I'd like to have that for my website........

Looks like the countdown is JavaScript generated. From your browser's menu select View -> Source to check out the HTML and any scripting (i.e. Java, VB Script, Perl, etc.) that generates the page.

Mike, you are to be commended for optimizing the size of your photos for your website! 4 photos of such quality have rarely loaded so fast on my dial-up connection.

And the TRF banner at the bottom of the front page is a nice touch; it works very well because you used a white page background.

The countdown came from the Angelfire script library, both counters and the date are javascript based. Go to view source

As for optimizing photos, its really simple and uses no specialist software. All I do is open the jpeg file that comes off my digital camera in Microsoft Paint, its 2.1megapixels and is usually about 1mb. Then under the image menu I go to Stretch/Skew and enter about 30% for stretch. Then I resave the file to a different name (that way I keep the high res image) and the filesize drops to about 30k.
