You don't need a 5" gun to take out a drone. Or even a .50 cal. A shotgun works just fine. Ask me how I know.

My neighbor buzzed me on my property many times with his drone. I asked him to stop, he just laughed. Next time, one round of #8 shot did the trick. He threatened to call the Sheriff, I told him go ahead. Never heard another thing.

My wife had filmed the drone coming within five feet of my head. Clear case of self defense.

My guess is that a contractor was performing a demo or operational test of a ship-borne system similar to this ground-based one, but without the "effectors" being employed, just the radars, TV, and IR sensor packages and the integrated air defense network nodes.

While on maneuvers off the coast of Florida, they fired the 5" guns at "tomatoes" (targets) and my brother snagged a few of the shell casings as they hit the deck and started to roll off into the ocean. I now have 2 flower planters next to my front door that are 5" wide but 3' tall.
Never let a spent artillery round go to waste...:

Hostile intelligence collectors?

Interesting piece that makes a good circumstantial case that these are in fact hostile intel collection operations. The US used similar methods to collect ELINT during the Cold War. From personal experience, there's nothing quite like trolling a 3-ship of B-52s down the inter-German buffer zone to get lots of defensive reaction.

Everyone should read that article by Tyler Rogoway. We have a serious problem within our military culture.

I live and sail in the area where this happened. I'm going to put money on the drug cartels watching them while they run drug boats through the area. We have one of these pangas wash up every couple of weeks. So often it doesn't even make the news anymore.

IMHO, for 70 years UFOs have been stigmatized and ignored to the greatest extent possible. But now all of a sudden it turns out they are real, and the military/intelligence community is shuffling its feet as fast as possible. They are trying to cope with the greatest failure of intelligence in the history of civilization.

"We’ve had recent statements by former Director of CIA, Woolsey, former Director of CIA, John Brennan, former Director of National Intelligence, Ratcliffe, and all of them are saying exactly the same thing, that it’s real, there’s something there, we need to look at it."

- from transcript of press interview of multiple major news outlets with Lue Elizondo.

I have a friend who was on a destroyer starting about 10 years ago. He operated a C-RAM or similar.
They were told,
1. UFOs do not exist.
2. If there is a UFO next to the boat do not shoot at it unless it shoots first, do not even point the gun at it.
Don’t make it angry, don't want to blow the "fuel tank" of something with that kind of performance.
This may have just been the policy of the ship he was on and it wasn’t discussed.
With all the stories coming out now he is disappointed they never saw anything.
