I was around 13 at the time and my family went with my aunt, uncle and cousin who must have been 10. I knew we were in big trouble when a guy came out front to introduce the movie to everyone. I've never been so bored in my life. I don't know what possessed our parents to take us.

Speaking of which.... The Spaceship from that -- not the lifting body aircraft, but the carrier for that -- the upper stage of the overall rocket. Great, magnificent project for a model rocket person, and right up @lakeroadster's alley -- short, wide, rear-eject, with a bit of NASA style to it. How is it nobody has ever built this as a flying model?

Yes it was long, yes it did drag, yes it put you in very uncomfortable situations and no it isn't for everyone.
But it was a captivating and beautifully shot film.

Paul Verhoeven is another person on the list of ostensibly intelligent people who either willfully don’t “get” Starship Troopers or really aren’t as intelligent as they’re made out to be. All the goodwill that Verhoeven garnered for Robocop and Total Recall is totally negated by his perversion of Starship Troopers. The worst result from the success of his version is that it pretty much precludes anyone ever making an honest film version of the story - not that today’s Hollywood would ever make it anyway. Am I as bitter about this as I sound? No, I’m way more so - but there’s no reason to vent here other than here’s what I’d say to Mr. Verhoeven if I ever met him in person: “Oh, you made Starship Troopers? Well bless your heart”.

I was so deeply disappointed in Starship Troopers (the movie). Hopefully someone will make a more faithful (and less ridiculous) version some day.

The novel had dystopian aspects, and there are ways to present those aspects in a movie without making the movie seem like it was promoting fascism. I'm not really convinced that Verhoeven was going for parody. There may have been a little dabbling in parody at times, but I think that he just made a lousy movie.

I enjoyed the movie though it clearly wasn't intended to be faithful to the book. I read the book once, maybe twenty or twenty five years before seeing the movie, but even so I could remember enough to tell it was quite different.
