Future is terrible :-(

OK, I got that off my chest. I feel a little better already.

Sunday night I decided to do my first Future job on my new Dueces Wild. I squirted a little in a bowl, got my sponge brush and went to town. Top to bottom, I painted it on there, it ran alot but I just brushed over it and things were going Great.

I had put some metallic sparkeling sticker paper on the fins to add a little strength, and I just mopped the Future right over the top of them...

When it dried, I had this milky film on the glitter paper. It looked horrible. I could have cried. I had this really nice paint job that faded from yellow to blue, just like the cover art except for a nice faded transition. Now I had milky glitter!

I panicked. I got the Future off with some warm water before it setup too firmly. That was a pain! plus I got a little water in the tube and almost ruined my most currently prized rocket.

I guess the goof was on my part because I didn't 'test' the application first on a scrap piece of metalic paper.

I'm still doing clean-up and am going to have to repair the BT.

What a bummer!

Hi Phil,

Future... like any other product used for hobbies, has plusses and minuses.

Plusses:

Provides a clear gloss overcoat for overcoating decals,
or as a sub-surface to allow decals to be applied over flat paints.

It has low odor and an easy clean-up.

Minuses:

Very sensitive to humidity while curing.

Has been known to yellow over the years.

Thins with ammonia.

I have had the clouding issue occur several times myself. This happens due to humidity.

If you are experiencing high humidity, try allowing the future to dry in a well air conditioned room. This often will remove the cloudiness from the finish duting drying.

The "it ran alot but I just brushed over it" makes me think you were putting it on too thick. I use paper towel or lint free car polishing towels. I apply it in a film just thick enough to cover completely without gaps.

What kind of glitter paper? If the glittery stuff changes colors with the angle of the light, that's diffraction grating. Putting anything over it can fill the grating and make it not work. I imagine there's other plastics and surfaces that the acrylic doesn't do well on.

Ammonia water is the solvent for it, whether fresh or old and yellowed. Keep a small bottle of ammonia with the cleaning supplies and use it for removal. Again, enough to wet it, not enough to run. Let it sit a minute and wipe with paper towel.

I have found that several light coats, with a couple of hours drying time works best. Ammonia will remove it.

I believe Future is a water based acrylic. I think that means it can interact with the acids found in some papers. A wise man – Micromeister – once said that you should test finishes out first before using them.

I have heard about the yellowing. I remember something about that on TRF. It was about like this. Future is not a UV filter. So, it does not protect the underlying paint from UV yellowing. If you use something like Nu-Finish that is a UV filter over the clear coat, the yellowing problem goes away.

Sorry about your rocket.

the clouding is not uncommon , usually it will go away as it dries

Well, that doesn't make feel any better!

So, if I'd waited an hour, I might not of had to do anything!

(tears are building at the edge of my eye...)

Ammonia! Oh, that's what's making my eyes water...

Thanks

That has been my experience with it. I also use it on my quads (4 wheelers). After washing I apply a couple of coats of Future and it is cloudy. After it dries it is crystal clear and has a high gloss finish. Really makes the plastics look and shine like new. Also helps hide sctatches.
