I get the ratio but I guess I never knew (still don't) if that includes the straightish section that the coupler fits into.

Because the ratio is used to indicate an aerodynamic shape, only the part that's aerodynamically exposed should be included in the ratio, so a 5:1 nosecone, that's 5" in diameter at the shoulder, should be about 25" long.
I included the weasel word "should" because I don't have a Mad Cow nosecone to measure.
