MAC 6" FWFG (Wildman Glass) Super BlackFly

I flew my 6" Black Fly today for a successful L3 certification with NCR in the Pawnee National Grasslands. The AeroTech RMS M1297W took it to 10,315' AGL at 600mph.

I couldn't pick a favorite picture, so I didn't! ;p Video and altimeter data will be posted in the coming days.

Wow, George, awesome pics and congrats on the L3. I am looking forward to the video as well. Of course, now that you're an L3 and have access to a plethora of motor choices I think it's only appropriate that you try to see what motors you can cram in that airframe. I vote for a Loki Blue M3664.

I am finding it is a bit more complicated build with the tailcone, getting it all to line up and connecting the retention plate with the long screws

You could do the tailcone/thrust plate a number of ways, but here's what I did... Pictures and MixMaster parts list should be self explanatory.

It's actually kind of fiddly to poke all five 4" long flat head screws down to the coupler nuts and get them started. I just live with the PITA because I don't expect to be taking the thrust plate on and off too often.

It might be nicer to use 5 short threaded rods and put a second set of coupler nuts just below the thrust plate. Then you could use short flathead #10-24s. That would be slightly heavier...

To make sure the 4" long flathead screws had plenty of thread engagement I stacked a washer, the serrated flange locknut, and long coupler nut on the bottom of the aft CR. I loc-tited the button heads to the flange and coupler nuts, if those get loose you're gonna have a rattle that's hard to fix.

Here’s how I filled the extra volume in the cavernous nose cone and prevented the chute from packing down into the pointy part.

Walmart pool noodles and shipping foam.

I used a 42" heavy duty drogue and 144" main, both from Spherachutes, which seemed about right for our field at 5,500' MSL.

An option, albeit at a premium, to look at is the Fruity Chute Iris Ultra Compact chute.

Not only do they pack into small spaces but they perform as well as one or two sizes up, as compared to other manufacturers. For example, a 9' Fruity Iris may perform a well as a 10' chute from another manufacturer.

Again, fantastic chute but at a premium.

The 6" Fly flew again today. Perfect flight to 9,424' AGL on the AeroTech RMS 75/5120 L1420R. I installed the 808 onboard camera for this flight.


Curious to hear other 6" Fly flight results as mine consistently out performs OpenRocket simulations. Be careful if flying near the limits of your waiver! Not a problem with my club's 20k' standing waiver.
