Press Release
September 16, 2010

BigRedBee is pleased to announce that it has completed the development of a license free GPS tracker and matching receiver. A Trimble Lassen IQ GPS receiver is paired with 900 Mhz FCC Certified Module. Several models of transmitter and receiver are available, with the higher end offering more controllability and lower power consumption.

The entry level transmitter directly connects the GPS module to the transmitter. GPS software allows control over the NMEA sentences selected, and transmit rate. Parameters are stored on non-volatile memory, and retained
even when power is removed. Power is proved by an integrated lithium poly battery (with charger included) saving weight, space and money compared to lower capacity 9V batteries. Battery life is more than 4 hours using typical transmit rates.

The entry level receiver plugs into your laptop USB port, and provides a virtual connection to the GPS module on the other end of the wireless link. Real-time GPS information can be monitored in real time using a variety of readily available (and free) software packages.

The enhanced version of the transmitter adds the ability to record flight data for later download to a Google Earth viewable .kml file. A g-switch detects liftoff at the beginning of the flight, capturing up to 20 minutes of flight data at 1 second intervals.

The enhanced version of the receiver adds a sunlight readable 3 row x 16 column LCD display for operation without a computer. It is powered by a lithium poly battery and is charged through the USB port. In addition to latitude and longitude, the display includes altitude, number of satellites, UTC time, and GPS solution parameters HDOP and VDOP.

Preliminary pricing and availability

An entry level package contains the base level transmitter, USB receiver, USB interface/LiPo charger, and all cables for just $319. The upgraded transmitter with G-switch and memory is available for an additional $49. The upgraded hand held LCD receiver will be available for additional $69.

Watch this space for future announcements regarding availability.

Will it fit inside a 38mm body tube?

This sounds like a great option!

Yes, the transmitter is roughly 30x70mm + antenna (90 to 110mm)

Here's a link to a couple of pictures to give you an idea of the size of the transmitter and receiver.
