Hello everyone!

I'm building my first model rocket and now it's time to build its launch pad. The problem is that I don't really know what would be a correct launch rod length and diameter. Could somebody help me choosing a correct launch rod?

Thank you.

Edit: Sorry, this should be in another forum section, I just realised it and I don't know if it's possible to move it or even delete it to create a new one on the correct section.

What size rocket?

Smaller rockets (usually with 18mm or smaller motor mounts) usually use a 3 ft 1/8" rod. D/E motor rockets usually are 4 ft 3/16" rod. Mid-powered rockets will use 1/4" rods or more likely a rail.

Do you have launch lugs on it? They're probably 1/4", so you would need a 1/4" rod.

The rod length can be determined using Openrocket, Rocksim, or prior knowedge. Could be anywhere from 3-6 foot length and is determined by rocket weight and motor type.

A G class motor isn't really something I would recommend to someone building their first rocket. Try C or D class to start.

Best of luck

For that size, I’d say 6’, 1/4” rod or preferable a 1010 rail.

I’m inclined to say here that if you’re asking this question, you’d be better off flying the rocket at a club, or starting with something smaller.

Fortunately you said “Building” , not “Built.”

Concur that’s a bit on the big side for your first rocket, strongly recommend cut your teeth on some low power birds first......

But, if you insist, invest in a 1010 rail and mini buttons for anything mid power. First time you launch with any wind at all you will thank me.

Buy a starter set and start from scratch. Learn slowly and in steps.

Admin might move this thread. No big deal...

I hope you have a really, really big field or this thing might end up half a mile (sorry, kilometer) away. First time rockets are highly attracted to trees and water. My first rocket in the 70s landed in the bay and my step-dad had to go get it.
