I have about a half-pound of lampblack and a couple pounds of Thermax. Both are nearly-pure carbon. Lampblack is very fluffy and extremely fine (colloidal-size); thermax is denser, not as fluffy, and slightly lumpy, but the lumps break up easily into very fine particles. Both are good black pigments---so-called India Ink is just lampblack dispersed in water. It takes very little to make an opaque solution. Not hazardous but both are best handled outside, with rubber gloves and old clothes.
